Allis toolbar. Will it hold up planter units?

I bought an old Allis cultivator yesterday it is from a WC and will be very easy to rig up on 3 point. It is actually a field cultivator but will work well for my garden. I was also wanting to use it for 2 Allis planter units. This bar is the solid stock not the thick walled tubeing that the bar on my planter uses. Will this tool bar twist or will it hold these units? I sure do not want to ruin the tool bar. Anyone ever done this? Thanks

I hung (4) JD 70 planters on a 2 1/2" square tube, 1/4" wall, and have not had any problems with twisting or sagging. The manual says that the planter units weigh 105 pounds, but that seems too heavy, I'd say they are closer to 70 lbs. The planters are all close together at 10".

Well that is encouraging. I think I will go ahead and put them on mine. 1/4 inch is not very thick. My units are problably about 70 to 80 also. Thanks. R Wyler

I ran out and checked, it is 1/4" wall. The inside planter units are between the top link mount and the pins that go through the 3 point arms. The outside units are just on the other side of the pins.

Had one from the factory with 4-plow middle busters on it..... .about 3 and a half or 4 inch solid as I recall; looked overloaded, but never twisted or bent it..... .can't imagine a couple of planter units would hurt yours..... ..depending on size of it.

Was it an Allis? This one is about 2 1/2 inch in diameter. I may try it and see what gives. :>)

How big is the shaft???? You didn't say. How wide is it? If it would cover 4 rows, a field cultivator likely puts more stress on it than a 2 row planter, which I believe you are building. Perhaps raised up & boxes full you could twist it tho on a bump - your planter units were kinda large & rer-weighter weren't they?

Well it is really a field cultivator and is wide enough to cultivate 2 rows the shanks are very small and dont weigh very much. The bar is just a little smaller than what my planter has I think. It does look pretty stout though.

Mine was an A-C; had those huge A-C trip bottom busters on it; sounds like you're talking about a row-crop cultivator rather than a field cultivator????? ????? In my part of the country, field cultivators only came into general use in the 60s/70s..... ...

Ok Thurlow. Yes this is actually a field cultivator it is an early one. I think it is for a C Allis tractor fullty mounted. But I looked at pics pf ones like mine in my Allis book and they are a field cultivator. It is made differently than the row crop ones.
