I am looking for a corn picker and some advice. A local equipment dealer has three New Idea pickers. One is a #10, one is a #309, and one is a #323. Any advice or insight is appreciated.

I have a #10 that I bought at auction for $35, just needed cleaning, grease and some chain to work. It was a great year for corn and it seemed overwhelmed at times. I had to stop everything and clean things out more than I wanted while picking. There's no way I know to turn off the husker.

I am not familiar with a 309? I've heard of it, just don't know what it is exactly.

The 10 is pretty old, not going to find much parts for it.

The 323 is about as current as you will get, has parts support.

I'm thinking the 309 must be the model in between, and in operation is pretty close to the 323? I would be picking between those two, depending on price & condition.

Around 'here' in southern MN you don't even see 1 row pickers. What few are left are 2 row deals. And much cheaper than other areas of the country. I had/have a 6a, 300, & 324 NI pickers, which perhaps are similar to the 1 row units you are looking at. I was not fond of the capacity & age of the 6a. Other 2 are a step above. If that helps any.

They show up at the consignment auctions. Comfrey, Gibbon/Winthrop once in a while, Slayton, Hutchinson typically has 2-3, etc. Couple times while watching one sell, a few guys would mention they have one sitting in the shed, doesn't pay to bring it to the sale.... One guy mentioned he had a 3 row in the shed, said that is about all they are worth any more - as we watched a 2 row sell for $135. And, I didn't get his name.... Sigh.

Anyhow, none right now, but those mid summer consignments usually bring them out.

I should say about 1/2 I see are 38", 1/2 are 30".

309 is a 323 without husker. Just a snapper.

IS it possible to "turn off" the huskers on these machines? I am looking to grow some indian corn to go along with my pumpkins, but would also like to be able to husk ear corn for bagged sales to hunters. IS this possible with one picker? Also would these pickers work with a newer Kubota 50 horse?

Thanks for the help.

Keith

I think some Oliver models had cover plates or some way to bypass the husking bed. Their pickers are not as well liked tho, I'm not sure why.

How heavy is the Kubota? You have plenty hp - we picked with a 36hp IHC 300 for many years, 100 bu barge box. But hills or mud made it interesting. You have a lot of weight & all different wheel tracks behind you. I'd think it would work if this is more hobby that need....
