469 Haybine Adjustment

I used a 469 haybine for the first time last year, with so-so results. I have thick orchardgrass and red clover, and I tend to cut it shorter than most around here, at about 10" (for better nutrition). At first I had a lot of clogging, but switching to stub guards really helped. However, I still ended up with uneven cutting, even after experimenting with varying ground and PTO speed. I have the shoes set on the next to lowest position.

I was going to try adjusting the reel position this winter, but I am not sure I understand its purpose. Should the teeth ride out in front of the sickle bar, to stand the grass up? Or should they sweep on top of the bar to keep it clear and move grass to the rollers?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

A $10 Operator's manual will answer your questions. It tells how to adjust the reel, and for what conditions. 42046913 is the part number. Call 1-800-635-4913 with a credit card in your hand for OEM New Holland manuals. Not overpriced reprint ripoffs.

I don't quite understand your problem. If you have made the adjustments as they are recommended in the manual it will cut correctly. Something else is wrong. Did you make an adjustment or have you checked the springs to see if the float is correct. Did you check the sickle bar to make sure it is laying flat on your stub guards. It must be flat all the way throught the stroke. Is it (the cutting blade) centered over the stub guard at tne center of the stroke of the sickle bar. These things will cut like a new razor if adjustments are correct for the material you are cutting. Good luck..... ...

Well, I do have a manual, and last summer I must have gone over every adjustment at least twice. I agree something is wrong :)

Thanks for your thoughts!

My PT-10 used to clog some places, especially the ends. It proved to be that the guards needed shimming so they pushed up against the bottom of the sickle sections. Then it didn't clog. Every guard has to be against sickle sections. Its not an inertia cut like a rotary more, its scissors and if the two cutting parts aren't sharp and not tight against each other it won't cut and will clog.

The reel on my PT-10 feeds the crop to the roller cut end first so the weak top doesn't get pulled off.

There's a bar out front of the reel to stand the crop up.
