I am looking at buying a New Idea 486 round baler. It is in great shape. The farmer wants $3000.00 for it. I saw him bale the field next to mine last year with it. He has decided to retire. What can anyone tell me about these balers that I may want to consider before purchasing$ The farmer bought it new back in 1989. Thanks-Don

My CaseIH 3650 is the same baler. I"ve had it since "89 and has been a very good reliable machine. I run my 4020 at 1700rpm, when it labors down to 1500rpm I tie the bale. This gives the bale a good outer shell so it doesn"t sag. Can"t beat a hardcore for holding its shape though.

Is the retaining bar the "windguard" that is supposed to help guide hay into the throat? Allan in NE has a picture of the newer model 486 showing it.

No, it's a bar about 1 1/4" dia. with 4-5" fingers bolted through it spaced about 6" apart. The bar bolted to both sides of the baler walls right where the hay enters the chamber or behind the windgaurd fingers. It was there to keep the crop from bulging out of the chamber when it is full before tieing. If you rake two rows together or have a heavy single row, the crop will plug there until the bale is big enough to suck the material in. I found with the hay bulging out that it is actually better because it catches the twine easier when tieing. The local Case dealer ordered the balers without the bar after 1990 because of the troule with it.

One more thought, if the baler has the retaining bar in the throat, throw the damn thing away or you will unplug the pickup more times than you can count. It is unecessary unless you are baling rotary straw.

Hi Don,

He seems to be right on target. Prices run from around $2800 for the older models to $7-8K for the newer ones.
