Instead of spending $700 for a hay spear implement that quick attaches inplace of the detatchable JD front end loader bucket, what do you think about this bucket spear? It mounts on the cutting edge of the bucket and bolts to the bucket towards the back. You have to drill a hole to put a bolt through the bucket spear and bucket. This is what keeps it in place. Additionally, from the picture, you may be able to see how it slides over the bucket cutting edge. I can get the bucket spear for about $150. Any pro's or con's that you can think of? Anyone out there have one of these?

I had a home made one, made from a truck axle and a old flywheel, the axle was pointed a lil bit and it was welded to the flywheel,it was pushed through a hole on the center of the flywheel and then welded on both sides,,then there was a steel I beam frame. Wasnt pretty but I never broke it, I sold it and now a guy is using it regularly, still working great, I took my bucket off to mount it...Jim

We have one kind of like that but we hardly ever use it anymore, after ruining two buckets I built a bucket quick tach and a bale spear that mounts instead of the bucket. If I remember right your tractor is a 5000 series Deere and I don't think it will handle the weight of a bale on the front edge of the bucket like that very well. I think you will be much happier if you just spend the $700 and buy the Deere bale stabber.

We always used to borrow the neighbor's bucket mount spear, and it worked ok on the bucket that came with our 165. The bucket would slide on over manure fork, only the bucket was welded to the manure fork by the previous owner. We had a different bucket made for it and that didn't have enough strength. From running the chain around the bucket w/a load binder, the top middle started to bend down. Keep in mind I was 12 when I put that thing on and i don't have near the strength I do now.

A few years ago we saw a bale spear on the side of the road for $100. Just so happened it was the right width, so we bought it. It isn't quick-tach, but I am thinking some day I would like to rig up a system off a skid steer to make bucket/spear changes easier because one of the arms is twisted a little bit and makes getting the pins in/out a challenge. My other meighbor made one for his JD with some old forks off a heavy fork lift and a peice of I beam. Cut & welded a little bit, and he has a fully adjustable bale & pallet fork

My neighbor has one on a MF285. It carries the bale way farther forward, than a fork that replaces the bucket. His tractor can barely lift a round sudan bale of normal weight for a 4X5 bale. It will not roll back. If you are going to use it for a number of bales, then get a quick-tach that replaces the bucket.

Way back when we had cattle had 2 sets that mounted on the lip. Had a chain that wrapped around and hooked back with a binder.

One set was purchased in a emergency (needed to drop bales over a fence due to mud) other set I made out of F20 frame rails.

My biggest complaint was that due to the fact that were on the edge. Put the weight out that much further and made it so the loader would barely lift and forget about rolling the bucket back. BTW JD48 loader on a JD 3020, 1000 to 1200 lb bales.

Be careful any rig off the front shouldn't be used for hauling just for loading on a trailer.

Just had that broken bucket problem a month ago because if a spike like that. Only way to use one is with a chain going to the corners of the bucket or you will not have a bottom

I do not have a quick attach on my bucket and bale fork but but I think I would just as soon change them out as I would use that. It just doesn't take that long. I would rather not have the extra weight of the bucket on the loader. I do not like the fact that with a fork or spear on a bucket the weight is hanging out farther creating extra stress on the loader. I have seen a few bale spears worked over to fit a John deere quick attach loader. Just my thoughts and ideas.

not just loader..what kind of stress you are puting on tractor's front end and also the middle of tractor..so many tractors use motor for frame even adding plates you are increasing the leverage ratio far above what the tractor and loader are built for...have nice day may god bless

Had a set up like that, broke the bottom out of the bucket. I had to use the chain and chain binder around the bucket trick. Hound

I BROKE THE TABS OFF THAT HOLD IT TO THE CUTTING EDGE.NOW I USE A CHAIN AND CHAIN BINDER,IT HOLDS IT PRETTY WELL.IT IS ALITTLE DIFFICULT TO SEE WHERE THE END OF THE SPEAR IS BUT I HAVE MINE ON A CASE BACKHOE WHICH HAS A LARGER BUCKET THAN MANY TRACTORS MIGHT HAVE.

Replaceable Cutting Edge in reply to bub, 01-12-2005 17:50:55
Is the cutting edge replaceable on your bucket or did it just bend the bucket? How big was that bale anyways?...abnormally heavy?

"Just bending the bucket" is difficult to repair perfectly if you have ever tried, you know. If you insist on "saving" $550 by buying this style, at least get one with a chain going around the entire bucket held with a binder. This drastically reduces forces on the bucket's cutting edge. I don't know how many more guys need to post here to convince you; it seems pretty clear to me.
