thanks for the replies. that is a nice picture of the tractor and baler. before i retired i used mostly round balers.we are in s. ms. and you don't see the real older balers that often for sale. either they are not that many around here or the owners are holding on to them. seems it is the same way with old tractors, not as plentiful as in midwest or east. of course the south apparently did not get started with tractors as early as the folks in other parts.. we kept on doing it with mules. thanks for sharing. have a nice day.

I bale 20 acres with a JD 224WS as I like wire rather than twine. I also have a 24T I bought for $200. Both good balers.

JD 24T or a 224T if you can find one would be my first choice. Really good reliable machines, easy to work on, and parts are available. Older NH balers are probably just as good, but I haven't used them.

Maybe we should get a auto RE: set up when ever any one asks what kind of old baler to get. Then again we never get tired of talking up these good old balers.
Look for a NH68 or higher. Or get a JD14t or higher. I have 2 NH68's a NH268 and a JD14t and like them all. Cheap enough get them by the dozen.

A 40 year old New Holland or John Deere baler will do you fine. They both figured out how to make a reliable knotter first, and have good machines. Should be able to get a NH 69 through 271 for well under $1000 in good shape. I'm not so familiar with JD, but the T14 & T24 are supposed to be likewise. You should be able to get parts off the shelf of any good dealer for these machines as they are popular.

Other colors of balers have their following, but are a bit more troublesome in forming good bales without missing knots, and with less of them out there harder to find parts & experienced people to service the machine.

A JD 24T may be a little older than 20 yrs. but for the price you can buy one for you will not find a better baler. Newer ones might go faster but will not make a better bale or tie better. Extremely reliable and easy enough to work on if you have to. Bought mine last spring at a farm auction for $675.00 baled over 3000 and only missed tied when it would switch twine rolls which was probably more how I tied them then the balers fault.

We got a JD 336 for a good price. It worked spectacular after a tune up. Not as fast as some balers our there but not hard to work on or troubleshoot.
