I'm still trying to locate a suitable 2 prong bale/hay spear attachment that can be mounted on a JD541 front-end loader. I cannot use a 3-pt hay spear since I need to load/unload a truck with it. I want a 2 prong version because I like the idea of using to for other things like moving broken tree limbs into a pile (I live in FL where we got our share of hurricane damage to trees). I've included a link to one website for those of you that claim you have never seen a 2 prong hay spear. If you know of a good inexpensive one please let me know. Thanks!!!

My neighbor and I recently built one for my JD 4430 with 725 Ldr. It wasn't too bad a job. Used 3" square tubing and built a basic rectangle then added pieces to the top that went up at a 45 degree angle to support the top of the bale when it is rolled back. Put 3 inserts in the top to give options of 2 spikes or just one in the center. Am also going to add 3 inserts to the bottom rail for loading trailers with sides. The hardest part was making the side plates for the quick attach that mount to the actual loader...took a while to get a good pattern. I like it a lot...and you could build forks that hook over the top rail like forks that attach to the top of a bucket. I don't know if your bucket etc attaches to your loader the same as mine or not, but I can send you the pattern if it will work. Also, I don't have pictures now, but I can take some and email them to you. I had about $260 in it minus the plate (which my neighbor had on hand and donated). This sure beat the $900 it would have cost through Deere. Anyways, hopes this helps.

Wow, $260 sounds like the price I was looking for. Of course you need a welder, which I don't have. When you get a picture I'd really like to see it. Thanks.

Will try to take some pictures later in the week...maybe as late as the weekend. Email me at [email protected] with your email address, and I will send them as soon as possible...I am not sure how to post pictures directly on the board...are there instructions somewhere. If I can find out how to post the pictures, I will do that if you prefer.

Tim

Oh, I've seen them, but typically they have shorter spears & are used for large square bales. Be sure you find long spears if you use for round bales.....

They really don't work so well for 'other things' - if you ever bend something, the bales won't stick or unstick as well any more.

They are more rare, so finding one on the cheap will be difficult. Building your own as someone mentioned would be the way to do it cheaper.

Hi Paul,

I had a hired man one time that built me the sweetest bale handler I've ever seen.

We had a Farmhand F-11 with the small head and grapple that we used solely for big round bales.

He unbolted the darned grapple assembly from the head, drug it aound behind the shop and in it's place built a 2x2" box steel vertical square frame.

Dead in the center, and still using the 2x2" box steel, he mounted a short upright with a 4 foot "finger" hinged to it at the top, out over the bale and worked by a common 3x8" cylinder mounted to the backside of that upright.

Out at the outer end of that 4 foot long 2x2" "finger", he wallowed out a hole and welded in a sharpened 1' length of an old 1" axle shaft as a "stinger" pointing down.

Long story short, by using the loader bucket's teeth at the bottom and that "finger" actuated by the hydraulic cylinder, it was just like reaching over and picking up that bale with your thumb and middle finger. It worked sooooo nice!

Shucks! Now, I gotta go out in the shop and build another one of those darned things, just to show you how it worked! :>)

Clem,

I've just never understood the line of thinking that we have to have a "spear" to handle bales.

Why don't you just get a grapple for your loader and be done with it?

Well, how much does a grapple cost and how much does a 2-prong spear cost?

The grapple is going to set you back several hundred dollars over what the spear will cost, but having a grapple on the farm is invaluable. I bought mine two years ago and you wouldn't believe the heartache this little contraption has saved me.

Hi Clem,

I have no idea, 'cause I'm not a JD guy.

But, my used material head, dirt pan, grapple & cylinder set me back $500. The nice part is that it will handle just about anything under the sun 'cept water.

I dunno,

Allan

"I have no idea, 'cause I'm not a JD guy".....

(Also) "I'm not a JD guy, 'cause I have no idea".

Either version explains volumes..... .(teee heeee) John

Aw, You ol' Rascals!

I'm not a bit color blind. :>) I like 'em all.

But, I still say this old F-25 is just about the duck's "quack" when it comes to loaders. Look where that weight is; back on the rear of the tractor where it belongs. I gotta find me one of these things!

I don't know if you can move logs with a bale spear. I Have a single spear for hay that mounts to the bucket and I use some old forklift blades that I bolt to the bottom of the bucket for loading Maple logs on a wagon.

You can buy just the spears and built them in your own frame. This way you get exactly what you want. Becareful when moving brush you can bend them if you stick them in the ground.
