I am considering buying a small to medium sized round baler.
I have a tractor that is in the 65 - 70 HP range.

I have heard that Vermeer has a good smaller baler. Which model would that be?
Any other models that I should consider also?

Average used prices?

I found a hesston small round baler 5530 for $600 it has some damage from a bearing locking up. I have a JD 770 25hp tractor. Would this tractor run the baler and is it a good buy

A JD 770 is not really big enough for anything but the micro round balers.

If your looking for a used round baler you need to come to southwest Missouri, lots of small farms with beef cattle, everybody uses a round baler here, I know one dealer has over 80 used balers on his lot.

On our farm we have a used M&W 4500 that is ten years old. It has an elevator chain, which is why we bought it. We used it for a few years to bale horse manuar all winter for cattle hay. It worked great as long as the person on the tractor knew what they were doing driving down the isle of a barn. Also, look at a Krone if you can. The elevator chains cannot be beaten, belts would stretch baling manuar, and overtime they stretch no matter what and are expensive. Krones look a little nicer than M&W, but M&W balers are simple, and most important, if you can find an old parts manual, it gives you the size of the bearings, chain, etc., so you don't have to pay the hight prices of the dealers.

Belts 20 years ago never stretched and the current belts will not stretch either. These OEM baler belts are manufactured just as the tires on your car. Have the tires on your car ever stretched? In fact when the belts get hotter they shrink. Most people think their belts stretched, when the belt start tension springs are loaded up with hay chat and the spring will not fully retract giving the appearance of lose belts and people say they have stretched. We have been relacing & repairing baler belts since 1972 and have never come across any belts that have stretched. By the way we are an M&W dealer as well and have sold 4500 balers.

I had a 504F and it was a good durable baler but really sucked the HP up even had the restrictor plates on it. I ran it on a 55 HP tractor in hilly country so a 65 to 75 HP tractor would have been better. I have since traded it on a used 1465 Gehl 4x5 and it seems to use a lot less HP but still makes a good tight bale.

I don't know if you tried this, but you can change the main drive sprocket on the F,G, and H balers to make them pull easier. It slows the baler down so you might have to bale a little slower.

A 65-70 HP tractor will run a 4x5 size baler just perfect. A Vermeer 504 Super I would be a good baler for you, also a 5400 Rebel or a 504L Vermeer. These are all excellent balers. The "L" is kind of the deluxe heavy duty model. It will run more money. Overall Vermeer makes a really good round baler. Nice simple design. Good heavy shafts and bearings.

Jimmy,

I have a Vermeer 503 I. I paid 4,500 and the best thing I ever did. I have baled the last 5 years with the IH 584 I own. It did the job, being only about 60 HP. The Vermeer is nice beacuase you can see the bale forming and can steer the windrow to the side that needs the hay. If you can afford it, the Rebel is nice. I just bought a IH 1066 and can't wait to run the Vermeer with that, I am sure it will bale better. I think the more HP, the better it will run. You will have a goo dshot at getting a small baler. Milk is up and these dairt guys want the silage models. If you just want dry hay, Heston makes a nice 540 or 5540. Augur Equipment in CT has two of them and they are nice. You can call them at 203-530-4953, ask for Kevin. They can get it shiped to you cheap. Good luck

We do have Vermeer 5400 Rebel balers traded in by some customers for tax reasons. A 504 Super I baler is very close to being the samething as the Rebel 5400.

You aren't apt to find any used ones on the market yet, since the owners will hang on to them forever, but spring for the Rebel 5400 (new) They are the best low horsepower requirement baler on earth....I got one 2 summers ago, and couldn't be happier. It's just about the only non-green piece of equipment I own. John

I found my 605F for$1600 at auction. A dealer around here typically asks $3500. I run it with a 7700 Ford - 85hp & seems to be a very good match.

NH & JD round balers are also popular around here.

The 504 balers would be 4' wide by 5' tall and the 605 would be 5' wide by 6' tall bales. The 5400 rebel would be 4' wide and 5' tall. With all Vermeer balers you don't have to make a full bale. The letter after the number will tell the model. F and newer are open throat.
