I have a friend who's asking about bermudagrass. All I grow is alfalfa. Evidently there is a new variety that's being heavily advertised. What do you know about it? Will it survive northern Pennsylvania winters?

I"ve been hauling Bermuda grass hay from down near Yuma Az for a friend of mine who is running 150 head of brood mares for a large breeding operation. They are swathing and combining it for the seed and then baling it with a BIG square baler. The large squares are averaging 1200# each.Supposedly they are making $3000.00 per acre this way.

It is being grown with limited success on the Delmarva peninsula. Research farm here didn"t have any success getting it to overwinter, and that"s just south of I-78. Might take some marketing effort to get people to use it if he"s planning on selling (assuming it will grow). Some was hauled up here from SC as backhaul by a local trucker in 2002. Horse people did not know what it was and therefore would not buy it.

Thanks, Tim. Didn't they kick you out of New Jersey yet? I thought the objective there was to get rid of all the farms. Every time I go through I see new developments on farmland. You'll soon be the Lone Ranger.
