I"m looking for a two prong hay spear to use on round bales. Does anyone know where on the web I can find a good hay spear at a good price? Specifically, I"m looking for an attachment to use with my John Deere 541 front-end loader. Thanks in advance.

Clem,as posted earlier a bale fork on a FEL is very dangerous as I know 2 local men that are now in wheelchairs because they raised the bale to high and it pinned them against steering wheel. Also bale fork can cut strings sliding under bale.Spear is much eaiser to use if loading on flat bed trailer.Twine can also be removed while holding bale off ground with spear.Single spear is all that custom round bale haulers use in my area.Tx Jim

A bale fork on a front end loader is no more dangerous than the operator. The bale would not tip back on him if he tipped the bucket/fork forward as he raised it up. That is just common sense. If the loader had a trip bucket on it, it should not be used to haul bales, unless the operator knows enough to not exceed the tip height.

I love my 3pt bale fork. Best way to transport hay.

On a loader, I guess one of the big points would be to unload or stack bales. A spear is much more practical for that on a loader.

While any operator should know what he's doing, some fellas do a few 100 bales a day, and stack 1000 at a crack. I don't know about you, but I get tired after a while. It's kinda easy to misjudge/ forget/ be sloppy. And with a bale fork on a loader, it would only take one time out of that 1000 bales that day.

I find myself arguing both sides of the safety issues - I just can't stand a tractor with all the modern interlocks that prevent any movement at all unless a person is buckled into the seat - pto, gear, starting. Me, I like the interlock that prevents starting the tractor while it is in a gear - the mid 50's Fords had that already and it is a good safety feature. Beyond that, they are quite a hinderence.

But I would give some thought to safety when it comes to stacking round bales. I would be more comfortable with a spear than a fork on a loader, aside from it seeming much more useable.

Right..... ..can't make anything idiot proof; idiots are so ingenious; if operator can't figure out how to safely use the loader , he probably should be using a pitchfork; of course, they're sharp/dangerous..... .

Wish I could send you a picture of a local farmer using a pitchfork to move a big round bale. Comical sight- until you notice the shadow of the loader on the ground that 'helped' him support the task. Have a good one- always enjoy your fences, and the posts!

we use both, single spear and double spear..will be changing the single to double have 2 doubles and one single... we do not stick fork under bale unless it is torn up ..if people that are using two spears picking up hay under the bale, please add another long spear in middle higher up...this will stop the bale from coming over when lifting too high..have nice day may god bless

Around here many implement dealer sell the spikes. We bought a couple of spike and changed our single bale spear to a double spear. We can either spear the bale or slide under it. I prefer to slide under it because we can keep the loader low and thus more stable when hauling. We also turn our bales on end and slide spears under bale and stack them in the barn.

I've got all my bale spikes at auction, never payed more then $35 for any of them. Of course if you need it right away that wouldn't work for you.

I would pass on that design. You will have trouble with the bale not wanting to slide off that spear with the support strap. Find one with a heavy spear that does not need a support brace.

No, you will not have trouble with the bale sliding off the spear because of the strap. I have two of them and have used them 20+ years and that has never been a problem. The strap just makes it a little stronger.

I'm also unfamiliar with a '2 prong' bale spear for round bales as requested. I see 2 prong for large square bales, and I see one large spear with 2 small stablizer mini-spikes.

There are the fork-lift type with 2 prongs that go under the bale, but those are _not_ good for a loader as it is too easy for the bale to tumble down the loader on top of the operator.

I've seen some good ones that allow both 3pt mount & loader mount, mostly I see them on farm auctions as well so not sure of the names etc.

I'm not too sure about that strap on top of the pictured one as well.....

I got a Fred Cain (Cane???) brand one that is 3pt & has a scissors mech on it with a tilting hyd cyl, can lift 2 high with the 3pt.

I see lots of them at farm supply stores, most would be able to find a loader mount.
