leveling device on offset disc

I have purchased an old AMCO offset disc harrow. The leveling device is badly worn. The adjustment nuts were frozen and the spring was rusted to the rod. I have freed everything up and replaced the spring with a new and different AMCO spring. I cannot get enough adjustment to raise the front disc over 3 inches. The front disc will come up high enough for transport when the wheels are dropped. I would like for it to set level. I have NEVER used one of these before and would like to know if 3 inches clearance is enough in the field and in soft dirt when I am making turns. I am trying to resolve these problems before I go the field this spring. Thanks.

Tillage machines should be adjusted to run with the frame LEVEL in the field- doesn't matter if it is a moldboard plow, field cultivator, tandem or offset disc. Doesn't matter if it is level on the road- that's not where it is working. Just like a corn planter- the frame should be level when the machine is in the ground. Three inches road clearance sounds light to me- I bought a 14 foot IH offset this spring- my JD4450 cranks 190 hp and it uses all of that in wet ground, with duals front and rear, but it raises over a foot above the ground to get through. Generally balanced from front to rear- check for worn linkages, etc. Any tillage machine should raise higher than 3 inches, otherwise how do you get through the lows when the ground is wet? FC's are generally more shallow, but I've never had a plow or disc that couldn't clear a foot when raised up.

Mark,

You make the adjustment in the field to leave a level surface, not to carry "level" going down the road.

And yes, when adjusted properly, the front gangs will only be about 3" to 4" off the ground when the disc is up; the rear gangs will ride quite a bit higher than that.

If it is set right, it should be kinda 'standing on it's head' when lifted.

Mark,

You'll have to use your imagination a bit to 'see' it "hooked up" to the tractor, but this is what my disc looked like the day I bought it last summer.

The dealer had screwed that leveler up to make it "trail" level behind his pickup. This setting is totally wrong, being like this.

You won't know exactly where to set it till you make a pass or two in the field.

Are the discs on the front and back gangs equal in diameter? There is usually uneven wear between the two. Moving the discs from front to back may be all that is needed if you don't replace either.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but..... .....you never know. Is your tractor's drawbar off-set; i.e., can you change the hitch height by turning it over?
