I mounted a 6 1/2 foot snow plow on my Ferguson Tractor. It's electric over hydraulic system and it's a pig on power. I noticed that it is using power in the "float" position, does this make sense?

Also ,I noticed it is real slow to lift this AM. I changes the oil in the main cylinder, my baterry is less than 6 months old. It is real cold this morning , so the oil will be thicker. What else could cause the main cylinder to lift so slowly???

Thanks

Peter

E-46/47 meyers? In 'float',the motor doesn't run but the solenoid (lowering) is energized. On trucks I hook the power supply (control switches)to power w/key on.Should be able to do the same.Yes they take power.Problem is worse with bad/slow charge & short cycle-lots of use w/little charge time. There are 2 screens/3plugs (they're marked)in the pump casting, front side, below the resevoir/cyl.Clean,drain,flush and use meyer or equivelent blue fluid. It's thin ,stays thin & has anti-ice protection. It does help, the pump & charging systems will thank you.

if it's a western pump they have a screen in the pump suction that gets full of gunk pull the motor and pump clean screen

On my Monarch pump. there is a solonoid that is energized to keep the valve open when in the float position. Could your unit be similar? Mine shows a red light on the control box when in float - reminder not to leave in float when leaving the vehicle with engine off, that is if you want to start your vehicle when you get back. Guys below are right, plow pumps draw a lotta current. Mine is on a diesel truck with 100amp alternator, and dual batteries, and I've run the batteries pretty low in constant plowing operation.

If your TEA is using a generator it probably will not keep the battery up even after you cure the immediate problem. If an alternator was part of the 12v conversion, then you have half a chance.

It shouldn't be using power in "Float". That will drain a battery in a hurry. Check on the electric controler as a switch may be sticking or in need of adjustment. The pump should only run when lifting or when turning if so equiped. Electric lifts on PUs used for plowing often need 150 amp alternators so it can be a drain on a tractor battery and a small alternator. A weak battery slows the lift in a hurry.
Cold oil makes movement slow intil it warms up. Most snow plow pumps use a real thin hyd. oil. Be sure you are using the correct stuff. I hope this helps you.

You could have air in the system. I have had a problem with mine on my pu the last couple of years. It has been so rainy that I have had problems with moisture getting into the system. The first time it happened, the temp had dropped to the teens and the pump had froze up. Took it off, put it inside with a heater next to it to thaw it out, and drained the oil. Refilled with new. Put it back on the truck and cycled it a few times to get the oil through the system and then rechecked the oil level to make sure it was up full.
