Im looking at a farmhand 8-bale accumulator and fork on upcoming consignment auction. Have been looking in the archives on this site and was wondering about the hydraulics on the machine. I dont remember seeing any pto pump with the accumulator. I saw the two fittings below the bale chute and figured hoses (none with the machine) just ran to the tractor.. do they not? my question is couldnt they just run to the tractor? i thought that was how the hoelscher units worked. is it possible to find a pto pump out there some where at a reasonable cost. im having second thoughts on buying this thing now. Thanks for your help

Thanks everybody for your help and quick replies. I have an 1985 Case 685, i need to find my manual for it but it does have really good hydraulics for its size.(65hp)Has Westendorf WL-21 loader, plumbed in separate, with one extra outlet in the back of the tractor. i have a little more confidence in buying the accumulator now. I do like the idea of the pump ran by the pto, but maybe this will get me by for now. Also i was wondering how the accumulator kicks the bales off the table, by apron chain obviously, but i dont remember seeing any trip lever or anything, besides the one that trips to push the bales accross. On one post something was mentioned about ground speed. since it rides on two dolly wheels, im guessing nothing is ground driven, so as long as there is enough hydraulic power going to the small pump on the accumulator, the bales will be pushed across until the table is full and on the 8th bale, the hydraulics also run the apron chain, kicking the bales off? sorry if im not making since, just kind of curious, havent seen one around here before, seem to be kind of rare. Thanks again.

Your correct in your assumption of how the bale ejector system works. The 1st bale is setting on a trigger and when the 8th bale activates the bale slide the trigger causes it to be overridden by the offloader (ejector). The speed of the ejector can be set at the hydraulic motor. On mine it has 3 or 4 ground speed settings. It takes a few rounds to get this set right but it works slick when right. The biggest problem you can make for yourself is not watching the unit and not clearing if you have a busted or untied bale. If they break on the accumulator picking them up will be the only problem. Nothing on the unit is ground powered. If you don't get a manual get back on here and we can talk you through it.
For your information I paid 2500 for this unit a couple three years ago. That included the pump & bale pickup. I run mine off the pto and attach the bale drive to the pump. The pump takes in oil from a reservoir mounted on the baler sends it through the drive motor and back to the receiver.
You'll have to chose what works for you. Good luck.....

Might be a regional thing, but around here, it was common to mount the Farmhand (yellow) pump on the baler, usually driven off the flywheel. Some versions used a v-belt, others had a direct linkage off the center of the flywheel and the pump hung outside the flywheel. As I recall, this version worked the best. I liked the baler/accumulator hydraulics all being self-contained and closed. Farmhand may still make pump mounting brackets or dealers may have NOS parts. HTH

The one I had, had the pump on the baler, run from the baler engine. Could all so be mounted on baler and V belts driven from flywheel. Secret of the accumulater is to have enough hydraulic volume. For a pto, the large farmhand loader pump like you see with an F11 will work. Sorry I can't give you gal/per min. needed. I liked mine, but like all acumulators, you need to be a good baler man.

The answer is "yes" on both. Generally at the time these where being built and sold few farmers had tractors with the pump volume required to operate the hydraulic motors at field operating speed which is based on your baler travel speed. You may not either. I do have but still use the pump that came with the accumulator because I like the idea of having a separate system eliminating more exposure to contamination. Its up to you. If you buy a hoelscher unit it also requires a very high volume that you may or may not have. If you don't you will have to do something to increase your volume anyway.
If you have a tractor with the pump volume required to operate hydraulic motors it is a later model and your manual will tell you how to hook it up to drive motors.
Keep in mind the number of outlets you may need on your tractor as you will require an additional outlet over and above your loader to operate the bale grabGood luck .

Good luck..... .
