Opinions on 6 / 7 foot finish mowers

Gentlemen,

Good evening, and Merry Christmas. I am looking for some opinions on finish mowers. I have researched the archives here for quite some time. I see a lot of the threads are somewhat dated.

I recently purchased a '56 JD model 60 to cut grass, plow snow, and play with. I have 5 acres that I will be cutting. Being somewhat anal, I prefer a nice manicured lawn. I have looked at King Kutter, Rhino, Bushog, Woods, and Frontier brand mowers.

My local JD dealer sells Frontier and says my 60 will run a 6 or 7 foot mower. I thought that the 7 foot mower seemed like a lot for my machine, but he says it will be fine... any opinions on that?

I've really narrowed my search down to two mowers, the Frontier and the Rhino. The local Kubota dealer sells the Rhino's and they use them on their rental fleet. They say they are bullet proof.

The JD dealer wants $2100 for the 7 footer, and $1500 for the 6.

The Rhino sells for $1400 for the 6 footer or $2400 for the 7.

Any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean by "nice, manicured" but don't drive that tractor around on the lawn if the ground is even a little soft. Maybe if you can get turf tires for the grass and chains when you need traction it would help some, but I still expect you'll be leaving ruts all over the place.

I don"t know the HP of your tractor but my 22 HP 2N Ford runs a 6" KK finish mower just fine. That is if I keep on top of the mowing and don"t ley the grass get too long. A couple of times I let it get too long so I just took half a swath in the areas where it bogged the tractor down.

A 7' machine should be no problem. At the prices you are quoting, you should check out a Woods RM990 finish mower with free swinging blades. 7.5' wide. I love mine.

Sure it will run a 7 foot mower. Quite easily, I would guess. Besides, with a 6 foot your tires will be running wider than you mow, making a nice job impossible.
I have a couple springs for your 45 loader, Tom. You can have them after I get to drive your tractor.
