What is the best type and brand of alfalfa? Are the Potato Leaf Hopper resistent varities worth the extra cost? What is a good horse mix? I am seeding in standing winter wheat late winter to early spring in mid-north Indiana.

I would try the University of Wisconsin website to research alfalfa trial results.

I planted last years alfalfa to WL 342 and have been happy with the results so far.

I'd take a look at Purdues alfalfa research. There are lots of good varieties. For me, I havent been able to justify the cost of leaf hopper resistence. Only 1 year out of 4 am I getting damage to economic threshold, and that doesnt pay the seed cost.

For me, I've used several different grazing and traffic tolerant varieties. While most of my stands arent grazed I like the extra benefits of the sunken crowns when fighting wet soils. My personal bias is toward Alfagraze. It has run 2/3 the cost and has better stand life and germination than the other ones I've used. WL has a grazing variety that I tried last year and it looked better than anything else but only tried the one promo bag on 3 acres. Plan to try it on about half my new seeding this year (20 acres).

I would tend to agree with KYHAYMAN. Better stand life and being able to graze the alfalfa will be a plus.
