I had a 309 planter. I bought plates at the local new holland dealer. Very expensive. I tried to buy plates from Lincoln Ag Products, but they seemed to not have them for the Ford planters. Maybe the JD plates will change out, but I doubt it. A set of plates for a 2 row 309 was $100. At that rate, I would have more in plates than in the planter. I guess thats why they aren't more popular. These were cast iron plates. Irv

New Holland still sells most size plates for a 309, some come in plastic and some in cast iron, it depends on the size of the kernel you are planting, you may not use the same plate every year, your local dealer will have a chart or if he stocks them you can lay a kernel in a plate to see which one you need, usually small round type for sweet corn and medium flat type for field corn but not always.

I'm not familiar with the #309 planter....If it uses "type B" plates, I've got the motherload in my shop though....If you have a picture, please post it. (Of the planter, or a plate)
