I'm just starting out and I'd like to put about 15 acres in hay (alfalfa / timothy). I've gone to several auctions looking for a used haybine and I'm uncertain about what to buy. There are several JD 1219's, several NH 489's, several NH 499's, a NH 469, and a NH 479 available. What are the pro's and con's of these machines? For tractors I have a IH 766 and 656. I have a JD 24t baler. Also, are my tractors big enough for the NH 499's?

Farmall 400 and a NH469 make a fine rig. I though I'd died and went to heaven after the sickle bar :-)

If all you are going to have is 15 acres I would say get a good sickle mower and a rake. Most likely a 7 foot so you can also do road ditches. Lots of people will give you their ditches just to get them cut. Put that 15 acres into corn or beans( $$$) then unless of course it's highly erodible and you have to put it into alfalfa/grass. Your tractors would easily handle a 14 foot mower conditioner as long as you go in a slower gear in the heavy stuff(1st cutting) if you are dead set on getting one. I also live in MN and I have an old 14 foot NH114..... goes over 100 acres 3 times a year and most times 2nd and 3rd cutting get raked together before baling. Wouldn't try doing it with a sickle mower but that's only because time is a precious commodity during haying season. Keep the pocket gophers out and sickle mower will do you until you can justify a bigger machine. Spend your extra money on your girl friend or wife !! Will be better for you in the long run ! lol

I have to disagree with the others..... ...My neighbors run a NI Disbine that is just a tad under 12ft with a 766D and get along just fine. I used it before with the one 766 they have and it had plenty of power.

I"d find a 489 NH..... ..We had one and although the rolls weren"t the greatest, it gave us reliable service. Everyone said they are hard to work on..... ...I didn"t find it so bad. A 9ft"er would work on either of your tractors.

Contrary to everyone else, I think a 499 is WAY too much for a 656 and in many conditions it will be more than a 766 wants. Of the lot and for your needs, a clean 479 would be my pick, followed by a carefully inspected 489. Forget a 12 foot machine until your operation warrants the size. Never been much on Deere mo/co's but some folks like 'em fine.

You have plenty of tractor for any of those cutting machines. They are all good machines -condition is everything on a used haybine. Look at rolls, bearings, chains, sprockets, cutter bar, etc. If you were closer, I'd sell you a pristine 479 at winter price. Wouldn't want to haul it from western Pa eh? A 766 is plenty tractor for a 9-10 ft discbine even.

All the machines you have mentioned are good machines. As to which one is best, the NH haybines will walk off from the JD haybines. A discbine of any brand will have greater capacity than anything with a sickle but the discbines also require more HP.

They will all do the job. Do you want sickle or disc cutting machine. I have a JD 1460 disc mow/co I am wanting to sell if that would help this is a very nice field ready machine. I am only going to a larger machine is only reason selling. Its basically comes down to do you want red paint or green. Me I prefer green for the balers mowers doesn't really matter.

Thanks for replying, RickL. My main concern is getting a machine that is dependable at a reasonable price. I'm open to either sickle or disc. How new is your 1460? How wide? How much do you want for it? Where do you live?

thanks

The unit if memory serves me right was 91yr and was a very good mowing machine. Width was think 10ft cut. books says 9ft 9" . The only thing it needs is a new skid plate piece. I found broken one in field last cutting when raking. The only reason selling is need larger unit since I use accumulator system. I also have a very good wheel rake for sale for the same reason. Just going larger. Its a 6 wheel unit, teeth are excellent. Located in southeast Iowa. rake asking $1000.00 mower unit $6500.00 or 6000.00 before Jan 1st. I have other units also available to 8312case IH discbine unit(new discs Bar is center pivot machine. Let me know. Also go to my new web site www.ricksales.com and you will see photos of both these units. The one shown in the first picture mowing is the same JD unit. Happy Holidays Rick

Hay Doctor will sell you a new 5-wheel rake for $550. Not sure a used 6 is worth that much more?

I have a 489 and have been very happy with it. I have to be carful not to cut more than I can get baled. I run mine with a 3010 JD with no problem.

What you have for tractors are more then enough for any of them. I pull a NH460 with an Oliver 77 which is a lot smaller HP wise the either of your toys.
