right along the road on my cousin"s farm. Dropped a loaded gravity wagon at the edge of the field and as I was hooking up to the dump wagon, a white Beemer pulls up. A rather irate upwardly-mobile couple get out and proceed to rip me up and down about my "corn trash" fouling up the yard of their McMansion across the road. "They"ve called the township authorities to make me pay for the clean-up of their yard." Well, they haven"t a clue about the right-to-farm ordinance in the township. Today I also just found out that a neighboring farm is getting 20 McMansions on it and an 80 acre farm I rent up the road is most likely going on the block in March. . . . I think I have to book an auctioneer and then find someplace else to go. Too bad I don"t own the home farm, its still administered by an estate.

We are a land of stupids. There should have been laws passed years ago to force people to "build up" instead of "build out" and take all of that farm land out of production. Some generation is going to be sore as he$$ at our generations for letting this happen.

As you know people in nj want it both ways. They like to look at the open land but they are unwilling to understand the activities that go along with having the open space. My place is split by a township road which has now become a connector road to Route 80. There are many unpleasant faces when tractor movements impede the commuter traffic.

There is no turning back the clock so we work with what we have eventhough it is frustrating.

Neighbors by my parents had the same problem with their hog farm. One neighbor didn't like the smell of manure. But you can bet they sure liked bacon and all the other pork products. Thank God for all the other neighbors telling them "what do you expect to smell you moved to the country, there are farms here." They ended up moving. Same problem by me, my neighbor has a regular job and milks 50 cattle on the side, again one neighbor doesn't like the smell. I am right in line with him through the mile. I would rather smell that then look at a subdivision.

Feel free to vent, same thing happening here in Mid-Michigan.

First of all, what those folks did was WRONG. But please don't lump us all together. We bought 11 acres a year ago and plan to build a house on it. Won't be a McMansion but we hope it'll be nice.

I spent many a day working on my grand parents farm. We are very familiar with the sights, sounds and smells of the farm. Grandpa always said it was the smell of money. Looked like a feed lot to me, but I understood.

Anyway, no advice to give. Just wanted to say that not all of us moving to the country are insensitive idiots too stupid to realize they are the newcomers and many of their neighbors have been farming for generations and they should learn to enjoy the sights, sounds and even the smells.

Just up the road from you in Alexandria. If you drive north of 12 on 519 and see corn standing, it"s probably mine, still have a few acres to finish, ran out of crib space. We"ve probably crossed paths and don"t even know it.

the way they do it around here in pa is if it was there when you moved in its youre problem like the race track up the road that race track has been there longer than i can remember then some city people moved in a couple years ago and tried to shut it down out of the nicness of his heart the owner changed some rules to make it quieter set a time limit if they werent done by a certain time they quit for the night but that didnt help the people still complain but it doesnt get them anywherte after all who wants a couple hundred drunk pissed of rednecks mad at them not me as far as farming everybody arouind here does it or did it so when a city slicker comes in and starts up it doesnt take long for them to shut up i seen on tv where a farmer got pissed at a banck and drove the tractor and spreader to town and plastered the front door he only had to clean it up and got six months probation sounds like a good idea for what you get out of it i would be willing vto do it if i was in youre shoes

I know that this sounds bad and illegal but If it was me I would have been very tempted to walkover to the guy with a gun in my pocket and then very calmly said to him, "I own this land, I have a right to farm it and by the way get out of here" as I have the gun at my side. Sometimes it takes a little corersion to make people see the light of day.

The gun idea is about the worst thing you could do- in my state, its an automatic 5 year enhancement of whatever sentence you originally got for the threat- and the gun makes it a felony, even if it wouldn't have been otherwise.

I don"t own the land. Concealed carry is illegal without a very difficult-to-get permit, and moving them at gunpoint with a shotgun would probably have landed me in jail for a year or two anyway even though they didn"t belong there (would have come under making terroristic threats). I wasn"t THAT upset.

It's happening all over. I'm on the Kansas/Missouri border, and in our quiet little town, we had a potato chip factory,been there 30 years or so, lo and behold the subdividers come in and build a subdivision right behind it. this plant emits a fine lime ash from it's stacks during processing, sure enough this was more than the fools who bought the houses behind a potato chip factory bargained for. what followed was predictable, long story short we now have an empty specialty building, 300 or so less good paying jobs, and a bankrupt company. also more cars, more rude drivers, more rude kids, more trash, and litter on the streets. More and bigger schools, higher tax bills. Our new scheme is called home rule, whereby the county gets to decide it's own ordinances, with out state legislative interference. Their ideas are leash laws for the county, animal density quotas, no burn ordinances, as they told me, " We like to think of it as being the city government for those of you out in the county". I told them that's why we live in the county not in the city. Seemed lost on them. So far we beat them back, but it's up again, and sooner or later we will lose.

Get ready for more of the same....I farm in what is still a VERY rural area of southern Indiana. I had one new home go in across from the farm house. We have farmed this place for 6 and going on 7 generations now. The original owners of the new house moved in and started a border war the next day. I spent almost $5000 on attorney fees to defend my right to continue our operation. I might STILL be fighting with these people, if it wasn't for the fact that they had essentially kidnapped the husbands child from his ex wife. There own ignorance tipped off local police to their whereabouts. End of story....for now.

I would recomed becoming pro-active as far as declaring your rights to operate as you have in the past. Don't wait untill they have you backed up against the wall.

This isn't the same world we are used to. Good luck. John

Do like I did and Move WEST..... Unless of course you want be in the "agritourism business" which can be quite profitable but you will have deal with people all day. I did it for awhile on my dads operation but it wore on me after awile, you have make everything look like the general public expects to see, you know that picture perfect farm we all want to own.....Just my 2 cents...Jim

a farmer i used to work for has had several petitions written on it but the right to farm law has work some. but they moved the finishing part of the hog operation about a hundred miles away to some land they bought . just raising the feeder pigs there now.one deputy once told me when the suburbanites move in , the farmer might as well move out. still waiting to have a good experience with the new ones. think a field is a dumping place for lawn and building wastes. plus an extension of their gardens or playground. might be a good time to update your liability on your farm policy.these idiots cannot see a 30' disc lit up by stadium and flashing lights!might make sure you are still on good terms with your attorney too ,just in case.and i'd check to see if any new laws have been slipped in without you knowingit.it's ok when the construction equipment and traffic disrupts your life ,but God forbid the farm equipment disrupt theirs. their radios can good boomp-a-boomp but dont run your tractors at night!!oh and be prepared to light up your equipment like a christmas tree! good luck.where i used to live and farm there is a 600 acre farm getting sewers and roads put in now.and another one is planning it.

You can,and there are ways of capatilizing on these city dwellers.Board some horses for them,charge them for horse trail rides,charge for the hay the horses eat.If you are picking corn in the ear,sell it to them in little bags for squirrel corn.Sell them little bundles of 5 or 6 sticks of firewood for fireplaces.petting zoo for the kiddies,pay picnic areas with tables,a big pond or two to charge for fishing.Just make it a little piece of the country that so many people want,right in their back yard.I know its not how you would rather have it,but in order to survive where I am,you can get rather creative,or land is much cheaper down south.

Too bad about people. I'm on the fairly population stable side of my county, nice town of 15,000 people across the river, was 12,000 40 years ago.

My county seat & the metro area on the other side of the county is having the same problems as you are, perhaps to a much smaller degree.

I need to live with the laws these people pass, But, at least they are over there, not over here....

I live on the correct side of the Ohio River from southern Indiana. At the local airport (in In.) a few years ago they started a subdivision near the airport and the residents tried to have the airport shut down (a small local airport)because of the noise. The result was an addition to the lot deeds warning the buyers about the airport area.
