I know nothing abut an Allis baler. Check the belting annd bearings. Just spend some time to look it over good preferably in the daylight. Have him hook a tractor up and listen to her run. Good Luck

If you have never been around a rotobaler its tough to explain what to look for. If this helps, check the gap on the trip latch plate, should be around 1/16th of an inch. In addition, check the entire bale discharge and twine arm/cutting mechanism. I would suggest asking the fellow you're buying this baler from to dig out his owner's manual, it will tell you what to look for. If he doesn't have one, I can xerox mine for you but its for an older baler, should be very similar unless you have an overdrive baler, and may be some differences in pickup and shields.

If you have the patience to learn, these balers are surprising in their capacity. You have to rake your windrows the width of the pickup raddle minimum. I've raked hay as wide as the bottom of the pickup and baled it-that's a 6 foot width. If they plug, pull the cord and run them in reverse until the plug comes out. I admit I'm different, but I've baled a lot of hay with a rotobaler and I like them. Don't let some bozo tell you they are all junk, perhaps some were, but not all. Well I'm getting windy, e-mail me if you need a manual.

i've been around them as a kid with my dad operating it, but that's been quite a few years ago and (hate to admit it) didn't think i'd ever want to know such things! i seem to recall that one set of belts sould be the endless type, and i believe there the top ones. the trip latch gate, is that the part that keeps the twine tube up, or behind where you trip the levers to manually kick out the bale? thanks for your help. ps, dad said i was a world class raker!

I have a '48 Rotobaler and baling is just as you said. I started with a small windrow and had to weave it pretty good to get it to roll at all. If I didn't, one side would trip open and I'd have to stop, empty it, and restart. The wider windrow fills the ends and makes a nice looking bale. The only hassle I had was that I was in a hurry and hated to stop, put the tractor in neutral, tie and eject the bale, disengage the clutch, put it in gear and proceed. I was using my '35 John Deere B which had plenty of power, just not too convenient.
