I noticed after I paid for and loaded my new grinder that it is for 1000 rpm pto. Seeing as I don't have a tractor with 1000 rpm pto, how much touble am I in? will it work @ 540 rpm?

I've seen a couple at Stamm's in Wayland, MI. I don't know (ok I don't remember) what brands though. I think the IH's were made by arts-way????? ? I don't have there # but you should be able to find it via yahoo. maybe try worthington tractor (??) ya I fogot about the belts too... you could try your IH dealers maybe they have what you need on the shelf from changing one over from 540 to 1000... what you need IS out there SOMEWHERE... good luck

Sell us the 350 and buy a tractor with 1000 pto, sounds like you need a bigger tractor any way.

You are welcome to it for the right price. It is to light in the front end to suit me. At least for what I use it for.

Most Feed grinder/mixers are belt drive off a "flywheel pulley" hooked to the PTO (no gearbox). IF you get another pully you'll also have to either get the PTO that goes with it or get an adaptor. Definately check the new pulley to make sure the shafts will work together. Maybe you could trade the salvage yard straight up for a 540 PTO shaft (all you may need is a the tractor end). shoot maybe even trade the old pulley too. A PTO shaft could run as much $ as some old grinders. Start soaking the shaft so you can get the old pulley off. Good luck.

That is what I figured I would have to do. I just don't remember seeing any grinders in a salvage yard. Looks like I really stepped in it this time.

Buying that new set of belts isn't going to be a picnic either. :>)

No gear box on this model. Your only option is to hit the salvage yards and find yourself the bigger drive pulley.

1000rpm pto units use a different splined yoke- something like 21 splines or so, vs 7 for the 540. If your tractor runs only 540, you cannot run the grinder. But some machines had reversible gearboxes, like my NI baler. You need to check in the operator manual if you can remount the gearbox for the other pto rpm. My baler gearbox simply mounts in reverse, and with the 1000 rpm spline yoke on the shaft, runs it at the right speed.

Two of the fellows who responded to your post below used theirs on 540 PTO tractors, so obviously it can be changed over; if you can't tell how to do it (or if you have to purchase additional parts), guess you'll have to wait on your manual..... ...

Get the owners/shop manuals for your grinder/mixer. SOME PTO driven equipment is as simple as reversing a couple gears to change from 540 to 1000 RPM. John

Hi Carp,

You are not in any trouble. But the grinder sure won't work on a 540 without changing out the gearbox.

What kind of tractor? Might be easier to swap out the PTO on the tractor.

Allan

I have an H, Super H, 350, M, 400, 450 and 560. I don't believe I can go to 1000rpm on any of those.

The only power transfer off of the pto is the belts that drive the hammer mill (which also drives the feed augers) and a chain that drives the rest of the augers.

Guess I need to get a manual.

I bet all you have to do is change the drive pulley..... .....As you said it is belt driven. I gave the manual away when I sold mine or I'd look to check out any differences.
