The down side to the 20 series Vermeer's is they are really heavy. With the metal top. They don't take a lot of HP to run but take a lot to handle.

The Vermeer 7020 mower is the same as a Lely Optimo with the exception of Vermeer uses a heavier blade and heavier curtain.
A shaft driven mower like these mowers need 20% less horsepower. You will have less downtime because repairs are cheaper and quicker on a shaft drive mower.

"Need 20% less horsepower". I used to run an 8' Lely mounted disc mower / conditioner ( nylon flails) behind an MF 168 (66 engine hp ) and it handled it like a dream even in thick tangled crops. The Lely is a very good mower and it gave us little or no trouble.

Anyone know some shaft drive models to list out? I am looking for a trailed low hp disc mower conditioner to replace a NH 489. I have no clue which models on the used market are shaft drive or not.

New Idea & Hesston have shaft driven mowers. Their design is a reworked Lely design just as Vermeer is a Lely design. New Holland has a more complex design that is more expensive but yet is a good design.

Perfect! We get about half those brands in Canada although many have no dealer or only one dealer. I'll keep my eyes open!

Someone told me the early NH's used Kuhn's gear cutter bar, anyone know about that?

The older JD & NH models were alike using Kuhn cutterbars. JD 3 point mowers use Kuhn cutterbars but JD mower conditioners use their sectional design, pictured below. NH has used their own designs for at least 6 years. NH has a multi-shaft design.

I believe that Vicon is gears and I have not seen a Gehl in a long time.
