Yesterday I pulled up the (a) historical page on the Halifax harbor disaster of 1917 you mentioned. After reading It it doesn't sound like sabatoge to me, just stupidity and carelessness along with no harbor traffic controls.

We had a similar incident in about 1947. They were loading Ammonium Nitrate into a ship and it got unstable or someone was smoking or something.

Made a terrible mess.

I was playing in my front yard about 35 miles from the blast the morning it happened and heard the blast...Rattled the windows in the house. That was on a Saturday. The next day (usual big Sunday edition) the local news had a full page picture of what used to be a ship, Texas City, and the Texas City Docks.

I remember crawling up in bed with my dad and looking at it with him.

I remember the Texas City explosion when I was a kid---I was in NY but everyone was talking about it---It was the Monsanto plant--A friend of mine, a Texan, and I were discussing this a couple of years ago and he told of a family that lived more than a mile away from the explosion and had some sort of a steel beam come down through the roof, through the kitchen floor and into the ground, where it stayed. When I was in school, I worked in the summer as a merchant seaman and was in port on a tanker at Texas City where the incident occurred. John Kirsch NY

Sounds like they were lucky the beam didn't injure someone.

Just think about the firemen whose job it is to run to a fire and try to put it out while it's still containable and something like this happens.

Really traumatic.
