I recently bought a Woods rotary cutter. I would like to take the blades off the mower and have them sharpened. When I lifted the mower there was only one bolt that attached the stump jumper (at least that is what I think it is) to the gear box. The blades are attached to the stump jumper and it appears that the only way to remove the blades is to remove the large circular housing (stump jumper) under the mower deck. What would be the best way to go about this? Also, does anyone know where I might be able to find a manual for an old Woods rotary cutter. Thanks for your help in advance.

Tom

While you're under there, inspect the blades for any cracks, especially around the attaching bolts. If you find any, replace the blades. If cracks propagate far enough and a blade fails, the mower deck won't contain the blade. In fact, it'll come out like a hot knife through butter and can cause serious injury. Be safe!

Mark is right. The job is far more difficult when removing the blades, been there, done that!

A 4" angle grinder will work just fine. You don't need a fine edge on the blades.

Make sure the hog is safely supported before going under it, those thangs is heavy!

Get you a $19.95 4" disc grinder from HF tools and do it yourself. I use a floor jack and jack up the rear with it attached to the tractor. Works great. Never tried to get blades off as they are probably frozen due to age and wet environment.

There should be an access cover or opening on the deck behind the gearbox (like a 3" opening). This lets you remove the blades by removing a bolt on the crossbar, then there is a slotted plate which holds the pins in place, remove this plate, then drive pins out. All Woods mowers have this type of setup on there blades.
