I'm considering buying a 1987 Hesston model 1085 mower conditioner from a dealer. It appears to be in pretty good condition compared to most others I've seen in this price/age range. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with this model they'd care to share?

Mar, as a follow up it looks to me like you may be buying from Lauf in Jeff or S&H in Springfield. If you are I've taken a look at them aand they seem to be okay but, as you probably know Missouri framers have a tendancy to use something until its completely worn out. Just be sure you check out what ever you buy.....

Bob, yes the one I've looked at is at Lauf in Jeff City. Thanks for the comments and glad to hear your experience was good. I'm still looking around but so far this one seems as good as any for the price range, condition, etc.

Mark, I have one of these units that I use for backup to a larger unit. I have had it for several years and find it to be one of the most reliable pieces of equipment I own.
There is one thing however, if you aren't familiar with these and that is the conditioning action of this unit is different than what people expect, as it doesn't use compression to condition. On this unit the rolls turn at different speeds and scarf the cut stems as they pass through the rolls. I think that drying time may be slightly longer even though I haven't been able to time it due to drying conditions always being different. Over all I have cut hundreds of acres with it and would not hesitate to buy another if the need were to arise. Keep it greased and the chains oiled. Good luck.
