Hi,
I have a 7' sickle mower that i hope someone can give me some info on.
I got it from a guy who said it was and old ford design. It is a 3-pt mount
it has a main casting with a channel in it where the cross-draw bar for the 3-pt hitch goes into. The 3rd link pins into the top of the casting. The mower is belt-driven with 2
40" v-belts from the Pulley the pto shaft is connected to, to the pulley that the pitman eccentric is on. This mower doesn't have any real frame (like a Ford 501 would), it has a 2 1/8" bar that runs too the right from where the casting sits on the drawbar.
the bar connects this other casting that the sickle bar mounts too and it has the inner shoe on it. The mower also has a smaller rod that runs perpendicular to this big bar and I have that running up under the rear axle of my 8N Ford and use it as a 'break away' bar. My problem is: I would like to know how this mower is to be mounted on the tractor. The big casting is simple, but if you do not mount the right-hand casting to the drawbar somehow the bar would never lift.
This right hand casting also appears to be how one would set guard angle, lead and the amount of lift for the bar. I have made a bracket but am sure it is not the way it is suppose to be, because i can not get it to cut even (slides over on about first 1 1/2' of the bar and the break away sorta' works. I am sure this should have some
spings or cables or something but am not sure where or how they should go. If anyone knows anything about this mower, PLEASE let me know what you know. I would be very greatful.

thank you, very much, in advance.

Mike,

I recently aquired two Dearborn sickle bar mowers.
They have the name plates still attached along with S/N.
There is a spring and a cable involved with the mower.
The cable is hoooked on one end to the mower and the spring on the other. There is an attachment that fits
under the bracket underneath the wheel that is the reset for the break away. It is adjustable with a odd looking nut that
has a ball and spring inside. When the sickle hits
something solid, the detent ball in the funny looking nut allows the sickle to retract using the spring and
cable. It re-engage, just back up until it re-engages.
