I have a 1950 8N and need to plow up my field which is clay. I plan on buying a new single or double bottom plow at TSC. Does anybody have experience with the product they sell?

I will also be purchasing a disc as well.

any comments would be welcome.

Fordguy;
I agree with the other posts look for a older set of plows. I think a good set of ferguson 2-10"s or 2-12"s would be a good match for your needs and tractors capablities. Decent sets sell around here for $250. New F12 shares are around $50 each. I use a set of ferguson 2-12"s behind my 2600 Ford, not much more tractor than your N. I can plow in 3rd low regardless of soil type. Good luck. Roy

I have a 2N and was going to turn over some loamy, clay soil for some deer plots. Bought a 2-14" Dearborn plow that was in real good shape.
Abject failure!!
An N won"t pull two bottoms in clay no matter how much weight you add for traction.
So I bought a 1-16" Ferguson plow and that still made my poor little N grunt. But it did get the job done.
My advice is to go with the single bottom.
I also bought and rebuilt an older 7" disc.
But in order to get it to cut good I had to add so much weight that the N could hardly pick it up. Makes it hard to steer when your front tires are flapping in the breeze.
I would look for about a 5" disc if I were you.
Then you can add some weight and get it to cut good and still be able to pick it up when you need to.
As far as buying from TSC goes; I always like to buy something that"s tried and true. Original Ford/Ferguson/Dearborn impliments are getting kind of spendy but you can always get your money back out of them after you use them for a few years. You wont with a TSC impliment.
Good luck
Jerry

In my opinion, a 50 year old plow will do you a better job & long out-last the new pressed steel stuff - for less money. Find a used old 3pt that still has good parts supply available, & use it for the rest of your life.

Those little pressed steel disks are extremely light & cheaply built - they will not do much to clay. Not much at all. However it is getting hard to find an old solid disk any more - most have the bearing shot & hard to fix up....

Sorry, but that is my opinion of them.

I have a Ferguson TO30 which is very similar to your 8N. This past season I needed to put in new landscaping - about 2 acres as well as a couple foodplots for deer.

I used a middlebuster from TSC and 5 foot disk made by Leienbach (sp?). Took quite a bit of time to get a decent seedbed using this light disk, but in the end the results were good.

I ended up chaining 3 good size logs on the disk to get it to bite.

I've got a 48 8N. I have several TSC implements, some good some not. My TSC disk is too light and won't do much in clay. I have a no-name plow and an old Dearborn 2-bottom plow that was built for the 8n.

So I'd suggest you look for a good older used plow and disk. I didn't pay a lot for the Dearborn, but there are many others out there, most available pretty cheap. They're generally built tougher than the newer ones TSC sells.

By the way, I have traction problems pulling 2-bottoms through sod. The 8N has enough power, but tends to be light if you're breaking sod in clay. My solution was to take off one bottom the first time around. After the first season, I can pull both bottoms through my soil without problem.

I bought a TSC 6' disc. I thought it had bearings instead of bushings or I would not have made the purchase. Depending upon how much you will use one, you may wish to look around and spend more elsewhere for a better one.

I buy and sell impliments on a fairly regular basis. (I have had 3 different TSC plows. (Actually Howse brand) I had 2 different 2 x 14", and 1 single 16". They are heavy for such a small plow. That isn't a bad thing. They don't have the greatest "fit" as far as the moldboard to shins to shares. I used one of the 2 x 14" plows to turn my garden 2 years ago. I pulled it with a tractor that will fly with 3 x 16"s normally. It struggled with the Howse plow. Pulled really hard. Add to that, you must buy a coulter "kit" if you want them. New, you will end up spending around $800 by the time you add the coulters.

You can buy a whole lot of "main-line" plow for a lot less money. John

The other thing about the TSC plow is that it uses shear-bolt protection on the beams. If you"ve got any rocks embedded in the 6" depth range, you"ll be cussing the bag of broken bolts. Better to find a 2 bottom plow that has safety-trip beams if you"ve got rocks. Ford, International Harvester, Deere, Massey-Ferguson, and Oliver all made 2-bottom, 3 points with trip beams.

We had a Ford 640 with fluid in rear tires and used a 2-14 Dearborn plow, Never had any trouble with traction unless we encountered a large rock. Having no shear pins, the tractor would just stop/spin tires. We plowed a lot of clay based soil and half was always sod. I would buy one of the offered Ferge plows rather than the TSC.
