Look into the bell of one end of the shielding. if the shaft is a "metric shaft" with three sides or a lemon shape, the inner AND outer tubes are twisted or galled. Replace them. Remove one shield from the yoke, collapse the shields together and cut the shaft right behind the yoke. You can then save the shield after removing it from the other yoke. Then work on matching and replacing the tubes.

Thanks for the term "metric shaft". It's definitely a three sided shaft. The shield was a one piece, black plastic, accordian affair. It's similar to the shield over the shaft that connects the two gear boxes, so I think it's original. It's definitely not what is shown in the on-line parts book. But we ripped it off yesterday to get to the shaft. The shaftlooks just like the parts book and shows no signs of bending or twisting, but I suspect it wouldn't take much now that you mention it.
I could order the parts on-line, but they won't price it on-line. Trick is still to get it apart, and I'd like to avoid splitting the U-joints. If I do have to replace the shaft pieces, I still have to get them out of the U-joints.
Explains why the PTO wasn't hooked up to the tractor it was hanging on! Maybe it wasn't worth $500.
