Vermeer 605 F corn stalk baling

What suggestions do you have for baling corn stalks with a Vermeer 605 F ? I always have trouble with the pickup plugging and not feeding into the starting rolls. Other than that, it forms a good bale once you get it into the chamber. Any suggestions from you guys who use this model baler in corn stalks would greatly appreciated !!

The larger band is for baling corn stalks it goes on the end of the pickup reel. There are 2 per baler. The other band is the standard.

I talked with the dealer here a few days agao and he suggested everything you did. I clipped off the outside teeth and put on the wide band. He also said to adjust the distance between the starting roll and pickup to 2 inches. Tommorow I should be able to try everything out and see how it goes. I'll report back with how it turned out. I must admit I get pissed when I drive around the country and see guys with dozens sitting in their fields. Most use a NH baler here and it seems to do one heck of a good job. My Vermeer guy told me he always had trouble too. We'll have to wait and see.

You do need to cut the outside row of teeth off. This will help keep stalks from jamming in the corners. If the stalks have a little moisture on them it will also help.

Lots of luck..... ..never could make it work "right"; helped that I had a 851 NH.....chain baler (really wanted to type bailer, since that seems to be preferred).....sitting in the shed, which did a much better job. Why corn stalks, anyway? Only did it a year or two when my feed was really short, but found it not much of a substitute..... ...

Beef cows prefer the cornstalk bales to the pure alfalfa bales 'here' when I set 2 new ones out and I can make a better feed mix using high & low value stuff. Makes good bedding too. See 1000's of them baled now every year, started about 10 years ago, more baled all the time.

However, I await some replies too, as I haven't figured out my 605F for cornstalks either.... I believe the new tines as mentioned would be a big help, as well as many times I hear new starter flaps (the rotating roll with the flaps) helps a lot too - they should be very stiff, not worn & showing white as mine do. Haven't gotten that far.

On mine the stalks feed fine in the middle, but plug up on each side. It apears the little tiny wedges on each side at the back of the pickup really foul things up. Once a plug starts, it rarely goes away....

You are right about the starter flaps they also need to be in good condition. If you are having trouble on the ends I would replace the teeth on the ends to help kick the stalks in. Also there are special bands for the ends that are flared out to keep stacks from jamming in the ends. I will try to post a picture.

I believe that the manual will tell you to open up the throat of the baler for corn stalks. There are two large rods coming up from the pickup reel, onen on each side. They have a compression spring on them. Use two 15/16 wrenches and let off on them to open the throat. Also if you have the metal spring teeth replace them with the rubber mounted ones espically on the ends. The rubber mounted teeth will help to push the stalks on up into the baler. Yes they are more expensive but the will last longer and start the bales better. Don't be fooled by the after market rubber teeth from tractor supply and such, they are not of the quality of the Vermeer teeth. If you have all metal teeth as they break I would put the rubber back and go ahead an replace all on the outside rows.
