It seems like I should be able to use a heavy disc harrow to smooth terraces and rough spots in my pasture. Local dealer has a offset disc harrow AMCO WOE5 SN 1016 Model 1622-BG. 6 foot size. disc are almost worn round. needs tires. fair amount of wear in adjustment bolt holes. I suspect it is 50 years old. Wants $750. Says new discs will run $600. I have a 90 hp tractor. Is this the right way to handle my problem? Never used one before.

Price sounds kind of high to me, at lest for this area. I bought a JD offset 7 foot a couple years back, discs in good shape, has wheels with hydraulic cylinder lift. Cuts great and I paid $350. An offset will really cut, as mentioned like a plow. With 90 hp you can use a whole lot more disc at least 12 or 14 foot. A tandum disc does not cut as deep in sod.

Mornin' HF,

You're right and that's why I never bothered to own one of the things.

Watched my neighbor use those offsets and boy! Do they ever tug! He used to turn alfalfa ground with 'em and the black smoke would just roll out of those 135 hp Masseys.

They leave the soil somewhat like a bad plowing job in my estimation; but I guess if a guy needs to cover a lot of real estate in a hurry, they would be the ticket.

Offset disc's were/are real popular in certain area's. I've seen many of 'em down south. They are better than plowing in ground that has recently been cleared, where you might hit stumps/roots/rocks.

And they will pull the guts outta most any tractor. A local excavating contractor uses one to "mix" soil when doing site work. He uses a 175 HP 6030 Deere to lug a 12' offset. John

I sold a 9 ft (maybe 9 1/2 ft) John Deere PKH in February..... .$2400 at auction; used to pull it (barely, had to carry it on the cylinder) with a 4020 w/duals; really needed about 115-125 HP to really handle it..... ..

Mark,

You do know that an offset disc cuts just like a plow don't you? There will be no pasture left.

If you just wanna level 'er out, I'd go with a spring tooth harrow, which will help with unwanted weed & grass growth too.

I would go to farm auctions and buy a old set of disks for about 100 dollars give or take 50. It could not have any paint on them and they could be quite well worn, just so long as they would do the job. If you wanted you could fix them up or just use them till they are pure junk, then junk them or use the parts on another one like it. I have bought 3 sets like this over the years. 1 set cost 15 another 50 and the third 100. You may have to go to a few sales till you end up the only one in the market for a old set of disks at that sale to get a real bargain.
