Hi, I just picked up an old 12A in really nice shape, realization of a 15 year dream. Looks like the cost of the combine is going to be the least of the expense, I'm looking at transportation 750 miles and building a building to keep it out of the weather.

I have surpassed all my previous levels of eccentricity, and bless my wifes heart, she hardly batted an eye. I guess she's just given in after 15 years of marriage.

While I'm not a farmer, I am fascinated with the history of the american agricultural experience, and bitter about the death of the american small farm. I've been dreaming about a hobby farm since I was 11 when my great grandfather died and left me $1500.00, unfortunatly life has had other plans for me so far. I'm hanging on to my dream, (if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything) and I suppose this combine is a way to make it more alive.

I'm new to all this, and hoping I can make some contacts with others who can educate me about this or other old combines of this era, their care, maintenance, and restoration. Any ideas about transportation would be appreciated, I've got till spring to get a building up and get it from PA to TN.

I know right off the bat I need belts, but the canvas is in acceptable shape. while surface rust is minimal and I'm not aware of any rust through, it could use a partial disassembly and paint. It's not financially feasible for me to try to make a 55 year old combine new, but I would like to partially refurbish it, and maintain it for eventual occassional demonstration use.

If I'm ever going to be able to haul this to tractor / implement shows as I would like, I'm going to have to develope an efficient way to transport this 107" wide machine. I suppose there should be a minimal level of disassembly that would allow me to put a narrow axle under it and allow me to haul it up on a standard size trailer?

Well thats alot to digest, hope there are others out there for me to dialog with who are experienced, with these old combines.

Thx. David

Congratulations. And welcome to the club.I recently bought a Massey Harris 6' pull type Clipper combine for much the same reason that you did.The old pull types are fading fast from the scene.A couple words of advice.Be sure to use some harness oil or neatsfoot oil on the leather fastening straps attached to the canvas. The leather gets quite brittle if not kept oiled. And store the canvas by hanging it with baling or other type wire from a ceiling where the mice can't get inside and chew the canvass up.Those danged mice have wrecked lots of canvases in the past.Is your 12 A a PTO model or is it engine driven.Mine is a PTO model. I sowed 5 acres of wheat last week so I'll have something to cut next July.(central Indiana)

Great idea! It is just as (maybe more) important to preserve the implements as the tractors. It is boring to me to go to a show and see hundreds of tractors in a row with nothing hooked to them. Not very educational to the public about farming or what the tractors did on the farm. As to transport, we have a hitch on the left side of the bumper of a 1 ton pickup to pull implements that you can't move the tongue to the center. Still wide but at least it centers to implement. Good luck.

wondered when i'd see you post here-- followed your auction, and contacted you. your combine can be transported without any width modifications. just need wide load permits, as said before.

Hello David it is good to hear about your feelings I feel the same as you do. I really am not too educated on the type of combine you have though I know they are fine machines and should be very practical for use and shows. I have a 59 model A Gleaner and it is a neat machine I really like it. Most of my equipment knowledge is in tillage equip plows discs etc. E-mail me and we can talk things over. R Wyler
