Need Rock Picker Recommendation

Am shopping for a rock picker - need to get more ground into alfalfa. Haven't been around any, just looked some over at auctions & online. The Haybuster with reel looks a little complicated, the Degleman or Schulte with revolving batts maybe a little simpler design? Are some of these hydraulically driven? Might be a problem for my older tractors? Any experience you'd care to share would be appreciated.

My cousin has one, don't remember the brand but has some yellow paint left on it. If I remember, it runs revolving forks off the PTO, and the hydrolic raises and lowers the forks, and opens the back to dump.

Spends 99.999% of its life taking up space in the barn. I personally have only used a stone boat... and a strong back!

Have you considered another option? In my area there are a lot of small rocks, fist to head size. People have local welding shops build large rollers, up to 6 feet in diameter and 10 feet wide. They can be filled with water. After picking the really big rocks they simply go over the fields with the packer. Any rock sticking up is pushed flush with the ground. No rocks to interfere with haying equipment.

Won't this lead to just a wee bit of compaction???

I like the schulte the best. I don't think that the old tractor hyd. would be a problem, since they don't have to turn real fast. I definitely like the Schulte better than the Vermeer and the Haybuster.

I just bought one Too old to have a brand on it. A comb tips up into a bucket which then dumps out the back. Seen them for $1500.

If you have dual acting cylinders a small tractor hyd supply will work ok as the oil goes to the opposite side of cylinder.

A single acting single hose large cyl could take the whole resevoir & partial lift could result.
