Hi all , I want to thank everyone who replyed to my previous posts . But now I have more questions about the baler . I got an original operators manual but I still need a parts book and , if there is such a thing , a shop manual for it because after washing all the crud off I found a broken twine disc pinion gear tooth and it's on the right side knotter of course . It looks like I have to remove the measuring wheel arm shaft (trip lever? ) to tip up the knotter . Or can this be changed while the knotter frame is bolted down . New gear is $26.00 . This baler has seen some long use . The plunger has nearly 3/4 " of slop up and down and a little less side to side . I have my learning curve cut out for me :'] . First baler I've ever had . Spent alot of time as a kid behind them in my grandparents fields in Georgia but never in the operator's seat . Might be cheaper to get another one and make one good one . This one ties running it by hand empty , so maybe leave well enough alone ? Don't fix it till it's broke type situation . I only have 6 acres of hay so if it breaks it won't break me just frustrate me . If anyone has a shop manual they don't need anymore post back here and we'll talk . Thanks again for any thoughts . Remove the bolt at the bottom of the knotter near the twine disc and the angled bracket (9/16" bolthead) that holds the knotter assembly to the top of the bale chamber and it should rotate up. The gear's attached to its' shaft with a roll pin which can be driven out with a pin punch. HTH

RobN, Hi, I tried that before I made the post but I didn't have a lot of time then so I didn't sit down and really look at the thing . It won't go up past the measuring wheel/trip lever shaft , the billhook tension nut and support pin stop it . I looked at it this morning for a few minutes and saw that if I took the cotter key that holds the knotter frame adjusting shims out of the drive shaft I could slide the frame over and it will then rotate up . It looks like I need to do that anyway to get to both sides of the pinion gear to remove the roll pin . I don't have alot of time to spend on it so it , like everthing else I do around the farm , takes a back seat to my fulltime job . Thanks for trying to help , Randy-IA

You're rite - it takes time to tinker. Do you have the old style measuring wheel (with the adjustable points) or the "newer" (as in 40+ year old) one piece type? I've only seen the older type in the parts manual. Good luck with it when you find the time.

I have the newer model with the solid star measuring wheel . I'm not in a big hurry to get it fixed if it's even broke . I turned it again and it tied so I think I'll just adjust the plunger a little snugger and see what happens next spring . The JD dealer is only about 15 minutes from me and they are open till 9 pm and on sunday's . They also have 4 pinions in stock . Randy
