I am having trouble binding my sorghum cane with this IH binder. It cuts the cane fine brings the top of the stalk back but does not bring the bottom of the stalk into the bundle. Gathering chains seem to be tight enough, any ideas. Coaltrain

LI have had the same trouble with short corn and you might try cleaning up your pan that the butts slide on real good with a wire wheel sand paper or something of that nature, and then make sure that the pan is set as low or flat as yoou can get it.On my Case binder there is an adjustment under the pan as well as the lever ,kind of forget about the IH. Also the way the stalk is cut can make some difference if cut at to sharp of an angle and not streight accross it acts as a breake and tends to drag.

Don't know about your binder, but oftentimes on a (corn) cutting head, there is a spring-loaded rod mounted on one side of the row, that puts pressure on the stalks towards the other side of the row- it keeps the stalks pressed against the gathering chain. Check for an elongated hole in the sheet metal near the bottom gathering chain, and perhaps holes for a mounting bracket. The rod is normally 3/8 or 1/2 inch diameter, running most of the length of the gathering area.

JMS/MN Yes you are rite there is a tension bar only this one is about 1/8 by 1" and we have bent it over again the chain where it will have a little more pressure good call. Any other ideas? Coaltrain

I don't understand your mention of a tension bar of only 1/8 by 1 inch, but whatever is there that is spring loaded, try adding more washers on the rod to increase tension. When the machine is empty, the rod should be pushed to the other side of the stalk area. Other poster mentioned shining up the pan under the stalks, also it is adjustable for height. Also try different ground speeds. Sometimes increasing ground speed compensates for a light crop. Sharp sickle is always important for a clean cut and fast movement into the gathering area. Check the holddowns on the sickle- you want a clean cut without ripping up roots.

JMS/MN I am very much with you on the tension bar to hold stalk over and sharp clean cutting sickle. I also agree and have tried the changing ground speed makes a hugh difference as well as pto speed. I have one idea and would like your opinion! Would it be possiable the teeth on the lowerer gathering chains could be worn just enough (about 1/2 to 3/4") to not carry the cane to the packing arms to catch?
