I have opportunity to buy a MF 1440 baler with manual tie. What are some of the points to look at? Are there any disadvantages to manual tie? Are there any other makes/models I should consider. I anticipate making 100+ bales a year.

I use a MF 1440 baler. It is, as aready stated a Vermeer 504G painted red. I bale around 300 bales a year with few problems. Most problems were due to the previous owners neglect. An electric or hydraulic tie woukd be a good investment. I have found that the Vermeer parts are usually cheaper than the MF parts.

A Massey 1440 is the same as a Vermeer 504G. It is just painted red. This is an open throut baler. The G baler is a good baler for 100+ bales a year. I would consider changing it over to an electric on hyd. twine tie, as the rope on these can be tough to pull all day. I have made a modified twine cutter for these it is posted in the parts and pieces gallery. If you have any more question please post.

I believe the MF is a ----- --pression (closed throat) baler in disguise - you can't go too far wrong IMHO. "Are there any disadvantages to manual tie?" Yup - sore arms! |:)| Good luck.
