PTO Shaft coming off (implement side)

I have a PTO shaft that keeps wanting to pop off the splines on the front of my 709 pull type chopper. It is the shaft runs from the tractor to the "hanger" on the drawbar.

Basically there is a big cast ring on a U joint that envelopes a splined shaft that runs to the gearbox. I have tighened it down really well but after about an hour or so off it comes again.

Any advice on what I can do to get that thing to tighten up and hold better?

the shaft isnt bent is it that will work it off no matter how tight the set screw is

What is it you are tightening down? They have so many different ways... Most use a bolt through the shaft on a smooth shaft & consider it the shear pin, but you have splines. Is there a big set screw, or?

Thanks Paul. You are right, Deere has about 8 ways of doing the same thing on that series of choppers.

There is a big bolt that runs along one side and pulls the large wrap around the shorter splined shaft.

The bolt is round about 300 degrees and then actually has "threads" that cross it that match up to the splines-but they don't do any real gripping.

There is a hole in the splined shaft but it is rather small and doesn't appear to match up anywhere to where a bolt could go through the thing around it.

It might be a special bolt with a smaller tip on it to go in the small hole on the shaft. I have seen these before and it might have been on our 709 mower. You could try putting loctite on the bolt. The red kind is stronger than the blue.
