I am wanting to buy a small tractor in the 20-50hp range and I wonder what is the smallest size that I can successfully dig post holes with. The soil is mostly shale and clay where it will be used. Also any input on the best small tractor for the money would be appreciated.

It doesn't take much to dig post holes. Even something a 8N could handle one. I would recommend a Massey 135/165, or an Oliver 55/550. There are other comparable models from other brands, but these are what I'm familiar with. They are all very handy low-profile tractors that can pull a 2 bottom plow, as well as handle a loader and do many other jobs you would have.

I have used a worn out 15 hp Kubota to dig 12 inch post holes with a cheap TSC 3pt pto digger in yellow clay soils. Worked as good as the 27 or 45 hp tractors.

On the compact tractors, you need to watch that they have a _true_ cat 1 3pt hitch. Some of the tiny ones have shorter rear arms, and will not be able to lift the phd high enough.
