Was helping my friend the other day stacking cow hides and he was telling me how much the fine salt was $6.50 per bag. road salt is alot cheaper so i got the thinking what if i put the road salt throught a hammer mill if that would work. I know we put the odd small rock in with the grain and it never says boo and salt isnt as hard as a rock so would it work?? what should i watch out for if i do this? has anyone ever done this before? i know it will rust the hell out of the mill but that does matter to me they are rusted out now on the bottem. sorry for being so long
thanks
keith from NB

Salt is salt. If you are getting right from the mine, in bulk it would be pure salt. If you are buying it pre-bagged, read the label or ask them if it has any additives.

I think hayfarmer is right. Calcium chloride is used on roads, and sodium chloride is used for preserving. And nowadays they"re mixing other chemicals with the road salt to make it last longer and go further. Might eat up or otherwise harm your hides. Jim.

The salt i got isnt realy road salt. I get it right from PCS potash mine. We used it before on the hides but it takes so much more to cover it. The fine salt covers the hide alot better. I tryed the hammer mill today and it did a realy good job well to good of a job the salt was more like flower whan i wanted it more like table salt and that was with the 1/4inch screns. Would it still grind it if I didnt put the scren in?? PS. found out today not to get salt in your eyes still rubbing them.

I don't think the road salt is the same chemical as the salt used on hides. Believe road salt is more like fertilizer.
