I recently purchased a JD 3 furrow trail plow. It shows a number 57 on the main beam. The person I purchased it from bought it in 1953 with a new model 50 tractor but he believed that the plow was used at that time. Is there any way to tell the year of manufacture, where to look for the serial number and are parts available for this plow? It is real nice condition with original Firestone "gum-dipped" tires (all three) on round spoke wheels although the mouldboards are starting to wear thin. It originally was a clutch lift but had been converted to hydraulic by the previous owner with what appears to be JD parts. If anybody has any info it would be appreciated. Thanks Bill.

I puchased a campground here in Canada and my son recently dicovered a three furrow plow and it has the #57 marked on the side of the main beam also. I have not been able to find much information on this plow but I'm still looking.

Bill, the information I have mentions a 57 plow as being available in 10" (yes!) and 12" bottoms. It is most likely like a model 55 which was available with 12", 14", or 16" bottoms, just a narrower frame version. Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks Gary for the reply...what information publication is it that you have? I have not yet found any books or manuals that mentions the model #57.

Sounds like you have a model 55 plow. JD still has parts catalogs available. JD plows were not serialized. It is possable to determine an approximate build date(within 10 years or so)by checking parts catalog changes with the plow.

Thanks Gary...the paint appears to be original and the decal is definetly #57. I have seen a model #55 that was also a three furrow but the frame was different in that it was wider and appeared to be adjustable in its width to accomadate wider bottoms. Mine is a fixed width frame with I believe 12" bottoms. All the information books I have on JD equipment show or talk about the model #55, #66 and so-on but not a #57 in that 1949-1959 era.

I would give a call to JD publications at 1 800 522 7448. They're very helpful. You can probably still get a parts catalog for it. That should answer a lot of your questions. I own 7 different JD plows, but have never heard of a model 57. That's what is so neat about this site, always getting new info.
