We have an opportunity to pick up this baler for a good price. It's a NH 1951, but I know nothing else about it.

Anything of interest here?

Yes it is a 77 all right. Very heavy. Pretty indestrucable too. The thing to look for is the cam rollers on the ends of the pickup tooth bars. They may be worn out but the bearings in the rollers are replaceable. The plunger stopped so it tied under compression. When the latch got a little worn it would make a distinctive ka-lank ka-lunk which could be heard clear from the back 40 on a still summer evening. I believe that tire was a 7.50x24 on the plunger side. The pickup side had a 7.50x16. Keep away from any wet spots in the hay field. It would sink like a battleship!

The man who farmed my Grandparents farm in the sixties had one of those balers. He pulled it with an M pulling the baler and a loaded haygon in mildly rolling farm country with no problem.

Don't know much about this picture. But, I do know it was something to do about those white (demo)New Holland 77 balers. Not about those white (demo?), look to be Farmall A tractors. The picture was taken in 1950.

Bill

Western PA here , yes it looks to be a 77, but not sure looks small . They are very heavy around 2500 lbs. I was very young when we use on, still have books on them engine and baler books for super 77. If you need to know for sure e-mail me and I'll look it up to see where to find the name plate.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. The price on this baler is $400. My brother looked at it today and declared it to be in "good shape."

At 2500 lbs., how big of a tractor (hp wise) is needed to operate it comfortably?

Assuming it is a twine baler, it is probably either a New Holland 76 or a New Holland 77. If the pickup is driven by v-belt only it is the 76. If the pickup is driven by chain and v-belt, it is the 77. The engine is a Wisconsin VE4.
