Friend gave me a Superwinch model S4500. Said it just quit. No documentation. Are there fuses or something simple I should look for? It has a small metal strip with 4 small rectangular plastic boxes that must be connected between the battery positive terminal and the positive lead of the winch. What's this for? And could this be the problem? How can I test it?

These boxes are circuit breakers. All you have to do is to hook the power to the winch side of the strips. You can by-pass all the breakers. There are no other fuses to blow. If that doesn't work, strip it down and look for broken wires or jamed gears.
