Front end loader for a Ford 900?

I have a Ford 900. I believe it's a 1957. Is it capable of operating a front end loader? If so what should I look for? I'd appreciate any advice out there.

We had one on the front of an 860 ford for years. Loaded manure, and lifted round bales with it. We did build a frame that mounted on the 3pt, then put a 55 gal drum on it and filled it with rocks for counter weight. Even then with chains, it did have some trouble moving in snow.

Your rock drum obviously preserved your front end and made steering easier with or w/o PS.

Bet it was a dedicated tractor too. Bet you had lots of other tractors to do the rest of what needed to be done around the farm.

The only one I saw (owned one for about 6 mos) for that tractor is a huge pipe apparatus that had a hollow frame to contain the hyd oil and had a self contained hyd pump that was driven from the front of the crankshaft. Had to get a different pulley that had a female spline in the center.

The 100 series Ford tractors are not really made for loaders. First thing you do with a loader is load it up. Axles break at the pivot point and splindles wear early. Steering parts take a beating as do your muscles unless you happen to get one with PS.

Front tires have to be increased in size requiring you to invert your front rims which put more stresses on the steering and wheels....wheels can crack.

My advice is to not do it. It overwhelms your tractor.

We bought a 640 in 1956 and used it with a Ford loader for over 25 years with no problems, except had to replace the rear tires a few times. This combination moved a lot of manure and was run hard, but not abused. However, it was rarely used to move dirt. Still have the loader and tractor, although it is semi-retired, no livestock, and have a larger loader tractor to move heavy items that the Ford just could not lift.

I believe that the 900 series is the row crop model of the 800 or 600 shown in the picture. If the 900 has a wide front end then it should handle a loader OK but a tricycle front end 900 would be very unstable. Even a Wide front 900 will not be as stable and as good as the utility model 800,801,860,861,850 type tractors. The advice for the crankshaft pump is the way to go like the other post said. My father had an indrustial loader with a crankshaft pump on an 861 ford when I was a kid. It could lift a lot ,was very stable, and low to the ground so it could fit under very low buildings. The draw back was that on soft(or in Florida Sandy) ground the Indrustrial loader made for a heavy front end and the front wheels would sink bad and made it hard to get around. That was not normaly a problem for us as we were dairy and spent most of the time on concrete lots. Go for a loader like a bush hog that will lift most of what you want yet not load you down. Toy around with the tractor try small things first on level ground then move up in weight and how high you lift it, then just slowly start moving about. I grew up on tractors and still it is easy to get oneself into trouble. becareful and that tractor will make your life very much easier.

There is not a way to put a crankshaft mounted pump on the row crop tractors (ie 900). The front support has steering gears and is in the way. You could belt drive a pump. Not much room though. Running it off the 3 pt pump is the easy way to go if you have a remote valve.

A 900 is the taller verion of an 800. But they are still a low tractor compared to other colors of the same size...

I use a narrow front H with a loader here on the farm, tho I got a compact a year ago...

Anyhow, the key to making a loader tractor safe is to really, really weight down the rear wheels. I've got cement weights dad cast that fit in each rim, 200+ lbs each, and I hang a frame on the hitch & put another 400 lbs on that sticking back a ways for any real loader work.

You need to anchor the rear end of a loader tractor down good & firm.

Your advise to be careful & slow is good, keep things low & level when you can. It is a learning curve.

Ford built the 'one arm bandits' for the 900 series, and there were many others.

I don't think the 900 series lends itself to a front pump, as there is no hole for it?

Yes. I'd look for one that has a pump driven off the crankshaft. Also one that has power down on the lift cylinders
