I have a 709 chopper and was doing some pretty heavy cutting this weekend. As I started back up after a break the shaft that runs from the tractor to the support tower popped off. It looks like the bolt that clamps around the splines just came loose so no harm.

However when I went to put it back on the U joing by the tower was really HOT-spreading up the shaft and into the steel around the cross bearing. Almost to the point of burning your hand hot.

I checked the corresponding U joint by the tractor and it was cool as could be. End caps on both look fine.

I know I greased both joints up good before starting the day, I have never had them off before but the one in the back was a bit tighter than the one in front.

Any ideas? Should I simply replace the cross bearing as a preventative measure?

The u-joint is fairly common one and is not that expensive I would replace it. We have replaced several on our 709.
