john deere 38 chopper

i got a john deere 38 chopper a few weeks back. there were no heads for it in the deal though. i was wondering if anyone might know what hay pickup heads would fit on it. thanks

I got a john deer chopper in a deal when I bought a whole shed full of equipment.It had an apron type chain in the corn head and then it had another apron chain that took the stalks to the crimp rollers that fed it into the knives. I traded it for a cultipacker so I no longer have it. I was just Wondering has anyone ever seen one of these and are they rare? Two local farm equipment dealers have never seen one.

HY Moose,
Back in the early 70's I had a John Deere 38 ensilage cutter with a two row ensilage head and a 5 foot cutter bar for cutting drill sowed crops. They also made a pickup head for for chopping swathed crops like alfalfa. They were very popular in Kansas and Coloardo or other states the put up Corn Silage, choppped hay and Sorghum silage.

The one row corn head of the No.6 and No.12 have that moving conveyor floor. The No.6 and No.12 are the last of the John Deere flywheel cut choppers. They also have that conveyor by the feed rolls like your talking about.

Thanks, I always wondered if I should have kept that old chopper but if they were fairly common then I guess not. I needed the culti packer a lot more.

I'm sure the heads from a 35 will work on a 38. I'm not sure about this, but i think the 5 1/2 foot head from 3800, 3950, 3970 will work also. They sure look the same.

We still have a old 35 kicking around for a spare chopper and the 35,38,3800,3940 all have the same size hook up.The 35 is slow as death with the 2 row corn head..... .doesn't take much power,but it's slow pulling the corn in the chopper.

The heads mount up the same but the drive sprokets are in a little different position I think.
