Corn Picker Adjustments

Today I used my $35 New Idea No. 10 Picker for the 1st time on a real healthy corn crop. I am still new to most of this and have a few questions: What determines what height to set the head at? When do I put the snapping rolls close to together? far apart? When should I adjust those paddles on the bed?

I picked a few rows, it worked, but I have a lot of broken ears and lots of kernals knocked off.

Run the nose as high as possible while still grabbing all the ears, this lessens the amount of stalk breakage and reduces trashload on the husking bed. If you are butt-shelling ears, close up the roller clearance until it stops shelling. Basically, the smaller the ears and the lower the ears on the stalk, the tighter you will need to run the rollers. A #10 will shell more due to the roller design than later series pickers, there"s just some you can"t keep from losing.
Can"t tell you about the paddles, as my 323 has star finger agitators and the 311 has belting flap agitators, neither of which have adjustment.

We had a #7 and I don't recall a paddle adjustment..... ...The previous owner had it setup right and we never monkey'ed with it. I didn't even know their was an adjustment. Went to a mtd. 2 row NI with star fingers and the rest was history.
