Rusty Plow

I bought a good old plow but the moldboards are rusty. I took a grinder with some flex 50 grit and took most of it off. I want to take it to the gravel pit and plow a little before plow days.Does anybody have any suggestions of what else to do?? Earl In Illinois

Here's the order I cleaned up my plow after it hadn't plowed in 25+ years. I tried plowing, emphasis on tried. I took the whirrlybird on the grinder and ground them off to a smooth rust and took a mystery oil (got to have lots of mystery oil in your shop) and put it on the bottoms, let it sit overnight. Add a little more, go out and plow. Pulled so easy I considered upgrading a gear. Until the oil wore off. Plowed until field was done. Whirrlybird again, and then cheap enamal paint, because enamal sticks to rust, and when the paint wears off either this fall or next spring, she will be shiny and new, and ready for paint!!! We'll see. Long term project. Good luck with yours! AND HAVE FUN!!!

Thanks for all the good suggestions. It all goes back to good maintence & taking care of equipment. I think what happens is most of the farmers thought no one would really care.But us 65 yr olds with farm background still want to play in the dirt and chase that mouse down the furrow.Our plow days was cancelled due to needed rain,but we still have several weekends left before bad weather.Earl In Illinois

When It's all said and done for the year, be sure to buy some cheap spray paint and pant the bottoms when their still shined up. Paint scours off quickly and keeps the shine you had the year before. You can improve it a little bit each year if it isn't like chrome in the 1st year's worth of plowing.

Champaign,Urbana area. We have 2 scheduled Sat Nov 6 at Deland,IL and Nov 13 at Pesotum, IL.Pesotum was on for Oct 30 but it doesn't look like its going to be dry enough. 1960 and older nothing bigger than 4 btm.I have a 1935 "A" Deere & 2btm. This tractor I started driving in the field when I was 10 yr. old. Earl In Illinois

Try mixing some 2 stroke oil and brake fluid and put on plow a couple day before you take her out this will lossen rust up.

Earl, I'm afraid he's right. Only way to do it is to plow.

My grandmother got our plow cought in a fire, and rusted it up but GOOD....PITS it was so bad. I did the same as you, but went two finer grits than that. My dad just said it'd take him 2 days of solid plowing before it would scour correctly. I'm talking replowing scoured. As it stands, dirt won't stick too bad, but it does.

Make sure you do the land slides too while you're at it.

That's the best way....plow a bunch of gravel 'til she pulls that rust off and scours out.

The best way to clean up an old rusty plow is do what it was made to do, go out and plow with it. If you plow enough it will look like crome.

We have plow days in a couple of weeks and the ground here in central Illinois is real mucky. Iwas hoping to get a little polish before then.Last year we had 47 in the field plowing at the same time. I hate to trip out and scrape the moldboards. Thanks for the reply. Earl

Sandy soil will cure it in about 1 round. I have a lot of muck, and know what you are talking about. Also have a sand hill....

Any dry ground other tham muck/ peat will work pretty good, but if you have a gravel patch, that will do great.

In the old days, dad took a gunny sack, dipped it in wood ashes from the wood stove, and polished the molboards with that. No grinding, didn't want to loose any more metal than need be, didn't want to introduce cross-scratches. If you want a bit of trivia for the show... ;)
