I want to purchase a New Holland square baler this coming spring and don't know too much about them. I bale about 2,000 - 3,000 bales per year. What model is a reliable one and will be faster than my IH45 I am presently using. I don't need a kicker.

Tom,

Last year, I was in the same situation as you. I picked up a 270 New Holland for $300 and rebuilt it over the winter, which cost another $750 in parts.

Now I have a great little baler that looks and runs like new. It doesn"t miss a tie and makes nice tight, square bales.

My uncle had a NH 67 and he made at least 250,000 bales over the years, with very little maintenance. It spent it"s entire life outside, uncovered, with hay left in the chamber. Amazingly, it also never missed a beat. My cousin has a NH 273 that has been great as well.

Having a good dealer close by is another factor in buying hay equipment.

Good luck,
Scott Goff

There are a lot of variables. Do you want a 14X16 size baler or 16X18, (in may area everyone goes one step farther and uses 3 tie balers). Later NH balers have more strokes per minute than older ones and handle hay faster, also take more power on PTO to run. Do you want to use a thrower on it? I have never used one but others tak about them. I believe NH is the way to go personally.

Not trying to be "smart", but they would about all be faster than the IH 45 if it is anything like the one I used to have. Baling with it was a 2 person job....one to run the tractor, and one to ride the twine box and re-tie the misses. I went searching for a square baler last spring, and found they are relatively scarce in my area, and a lot of junk out there. One dealer told me that they had somewhat gained popularity, and since not many were being built any longer that the price has gone up some, and there were a lot of worn out machines around. I got lucky and found a good one that went right to work with no tinkering.
