Flail Choppers????

I've been thinking about getting a flail chopper to use on some hay though out the summer. I'm limited to pasture around the house but have many close hay fields. I've seen JD 16A, NH 36&38, and I think gehl had made a model 72 which are all 6' cuts. Any one have a liking to any of the listed flails, pro & cons to these cutters.

get a new holland wore out they will still out blow a John deere. And the best thing of all they still make them new john deere is not going to carry parts for the 15A 16A but for 2 more years

We have an old M-C (Matthews Company) that my grandpa bought probably 30 some years ago. He and my dad used to use it for green chopping sorghum sudan for the dairy cows and we now use it to chop corn stalks to be used for bedding. Nice thing about this machine is it has chain drive instead of belt so you don"t have to worry about slipping and ruining a belt. Just my experience.

Go with a JD 16A. A rugged mower with all parts easy to get from the local dealer. I bought a new set of "knives" from an outfit called Montage? Enterprises that deals with flail mower parts. About half the price of the JD dealer.
I mow some pastures and hayfields and there are a few spots where the grass is different (Fescues?)that it bogs down. Just slow up or you will smoke the belt. I have found that if I keep the belt more toward the tight side it works better and the belt lasts longer.

I have a JD 16A and it's a good machine. Not to much to go wrong, and you can easily get parts from deere. The secret to flail choppers, like balers, is to have live power. They can be pluged easy if the grass is damp and you don't have live pto. My father had a Gehl 72 for a while. OK machine I guess, but the gear box kept working loose. I have never used New holland, but have talked to people. One guy told me he put $450 just into the clutch unit. That is more than I payed for my 16a. New holland parts seem to be more expencive generally, but that could just be my dealer. I would not hesitate going with a JD 16a.
