I am very new to baling, but I think that I can feel something was not quite right when I baled this fall. I had no one knowledgable around to trouble shoot either.

I was using a JD 720D and JD 70G. At first I thought that the problem was that my drawbar was too short on the 720, because it was cut for some reason. So I hooked it to my 70G which has a long bar and it still swayed.

So when I saw sway, I think that I have a long reach 273. The PTO shaft is proped by a pillar where the PTO has a U joint. WHen I am baling, the pto shaft and the mid pillar rocks back and forth, quite a bit. Bad enough that I think that it is damaging the plate that has the lands and ridges that freewheels when the power is off. It also makes the tractor rock a bit too. It just doesnt seem correct.

Comments on my experience, or am I too paranoid...

Your baler question interests me as I bale with a 520 and New Holland 68. The two cylinder John Deeres with live power have the pto shaft ofset a bit to the left
and the tractor drawbar needs to be ofset to the left so as the hole in the drawbar in the long position aliagns with the pto shaft. With out making this adjustment it causes alot of chatter and vibration of the drvetrain. If you have a manual check this adjustment and see if your drawbar needs to be moved over for pto work. My mid support moves some but nothing like it does if I don't move the drawbar to the left. Good luck Larry D

I won't totally disagree with Ed, but believe me when I tell you that there are alot of New Holland baler PTO's out there that rock back and forth and in and out. Is this normal? I don't know. Should you tighten it up? Yes, I believe I would. That is where Ed's reply is acurate. Replace the items that he said and you will be find. Steve

The PTO could just be a tad bit sloppy, and the power cycle from the 2 cylinder engine in the tractor will really make the "Bit Sloppy" to look like "Alot Sloppy" if your feeding it good. I did alot of baling with 2 cyl"s and they aren"t my first choice for PTO work, but like the others said, replace some parts and it"ll work good for you.

No you are not paranoid. The PTO mounting parts are badly worn. Replace the bolts and bushings and your rock and roll PTO will be steady as a rock. The pillar as you call it should be free to tip forward and back as the shaft telescopes but not sideways. There is a yoke on the top of the pillar that should be free to turn but not rock. Your drawbar should be of a legnth that the drawpin is halfway between the centers of the first two U-joints. Ed

Yes, its the pillar that rocks back and forth. I am going to untarp it and rebuild that piece. I for sure recall that it was very loose. I will also relook at my manual for drawbar locations.

Thanks, very helpful information.

Look up about drawbar and hitch. If you can't find it e-mail me .I'll look in a manual, Pto is to be straight not level. straight on level ground. At the point where the PTO is goin to the first sirport this sould be forward just a bit like 1 inch off verical(toward the tractor). A few measurment and not the fastest typer and picture are better as far as setting her up. YES replace all those bolts and bushing use harder bolts if your going to have a load of hay behinde the baler like grade 5.
Have a Good One!!
