I picked up a 4 row Oliver 540 corn planter with the intent of planting 5a corn next spring. It appears to be in excellent condition. I have been watchin here and ebay for a operators manual of some kind, but have yet to see one. So I have a few questions.

Did AGCO buy up Oliver? Who who be a source for reprints?

There are three sets of plates. Could someone explain which is for what or what size seed?

540 planters did not use the John Deere type plates, the 543 which was the 540 replacement did.. The B on the end of part number means that the part was the responsibility of the South Bend plant where the planter was made.It has no affect on the part itself. Yes the museum does have photo copies.Questions?

Those plates are "B" type John Deere as mentioned. You can still get them, only made in plastic, from Lincoln Ag. They are easily found on their website. You can download a conversion chart that will give the Deere cast iron #'s vs. the plastic "Lustran" plates. They sell for around $11 per plate, plus shipping.

Figure out what plates you want, then e-mail me at [email protected] I have HUNDREDS of them. I'll make you a deal you can't refuse!

White & Oliver merged in the very early "70s, and then Agco soon absorbed it all. So you would be looking for a White dealer in the Agco family for parts & manuals.

There is a historical society in Iowa that took over all the reprinting of all Oliver manuals. They have a web site, not sure what right now, but it is the Floyd Co Historical Society for Oliver stuff. A Google search for that should get you right there. This is your best source for any olive green manuals.

Errin OH,

It is my understanding the Oliver has ended up at AGCO, so that is where to start for parts or a manual. As for the plates I have an old chart from a seed corn bag. I will give you the cross ref. to JD plates since your seed dealer will most likely be familiar with them.

245501B--JD Plastic B6- for medium flats (common)
245531B--JD Plastic BO- for large rounds (I think)
245524B-- JD Plastic B 25- for rounds.
I have not planted rounds for years, so I'm not too familiar with those plates. The B6 seed is common and you should not have a problem getting it. Do order you seed early. You are limited with your plates so it may be hard to get the right size next spring. I might also add that none of the Oliver numbers on my chart include the letter "B". I think they are the same, but not quite sure. This will get you started. Some others will help you out. LOL
