I have an 8 foot fast hitch disc that I wrapped around a tree the other day and bent one of the axles(2 inches thick by 4 feet long) to a 45 degree angle. Any suggestions as to how I can straighten it?

Thanks for the input.

I can't resist, sorry in reply to davidw, 10-20-2004 22:44:09
Next time, try cutting the trees down rather than just disking them in.

If you have a hard time getting the disks and spacers off past the bend, consider cutting the axle shaft. I don't know if it can be straightened and be any good, once it has been bent that far. You might have to buy a new axle.

again if you can get sapcers and blades off a bottle jack a tongue of a tractor and the shaft should work. put the shaft on the floor and pump up the bottle jack as if you were trying to lift the back of the tractor

Shoup is on-line & sells a lot of disk parts, including making axles to your specs.

Are you sure on 2" axles???? Is this a giant sod-breaking monster disk? Never saw that big.

In my mind for an 8' disk probably doesnt have a 2" axle. My guess is that the blade spacers are 2" but the axle is more like 1" or so. But i have been wrong before. If you can disassemble it and get the blades, bearings and the spacers off the axle. Then you could press it straight. The trick will be disassembling it with a crooked axle as the spacers and bearings like a atraight axle to slide on. Also, check the price of a new axle first as they arent usually that expensive.

A machine shop with a hydraulic press ought to be able to do it. Otherwise I use a 15 lb sledge, lots of whoopie and a block of wood on the shop floor. Try to drive it past center so it'll spring back to straight.

ASC has axles for sale, but don't know about 2". I get 4' 1 1/8 for $14 from them
